  1. Other families of organic compounds you need to know

  2. Objectives

  3. Classification of organic compounds R stands for the carbon chain e.g. if R is two carbons R-OH means ethanol. R-COOH is ethanoic acid. Download list from blackboard and learn for a quiz

  4. Alcohols • All have an OH or Hydoxyl group

  5. Alcohol: Ethanol This is the structure of ethanol. What is its key feature that makes it an alcohol

  6. Which alcohol is this?

  7. Methanol • What do you think the formula of methanol will be? • What is the molecular formula for simple organic alcohols? This is a picture of a meths drinker. Methylated spirit is ethanol laced with methanol . Methanol is added so that undiluted ethanol can be sold without the large amount of tax present in strong spirits. The only problem is the meths drinkers drink the spirit and the effects of methanol do not wear off. They are permanently brain damaged.

  8. Alcohols • Alcohols are part of a large group of carbon chemical families that contain oxygen. Ones we are going to study are: • Alcohols ROH • Ethers ROR’ • Aldehydes RC=OH • Ketones RC=OR • Carboxylic acids RC=OOH • (where R stands for the carbon chain and C=O stands for carbon bound to oxygen by a double bond)

  9. Alcohols and their relatives

  10. Aldehydes

  11. Aldehydes contd.

  12. Ketones

  13. Uses of aldehydes and ketone

  14. Uses continued
