Chapter 5

Chapter 5. FACTORING. Section 5.1. Factoring a Monomial From a Trinomial. Factoring is…. Re-writing as the product of 2 or more factors. For example: 6 = 2 · 3 8 = 4 · 2 But… we’ll use POLYNOMIALS. Factoring out a GCF (Greatest Common Factor). 1. Find the GCF of the coefficients.

  1. Chapter 5 FACTORING

  2. Section 5.1 Factoring a Monomial From a Trinomial

  3. Factoring is… • Re-writing as the product of 2 or more factors. • For example: 6 = 2 · 3 8 = 4 · 2 But… we’ll use POLYNOMIALS.

  4. Factoring out a GCF (Greatest Common Factor) • 1. Find the GCF of the coefficients. • 2. Find the largest power of each common variable. • 3. The GCF is the product of steps 1 and 2 • 4. DIVIDE each term by the GCF. • Final answer is a multiplication problem: GCF ( Quotient after you divide )

  5. Ex: factor the GCF from each • 1) 4x + 2 2) 3n2 – 10n • 3) 3x5 – 15x4 4) 26y12 – 2y3 • 5) 48m4n2 - 16mn2 • 6) 12a3 – 16a2 -4a

  6. 7) 52x2y2 + 16xy3 + 26z • 8) 9x(3x – 4) – 4(3x – 4) • 9) 3x(7x + 1) + 2(7x + 1)
