  2. Why Become Part of the WHS PLTW Biomedical Science • PLTW prepares students for the global economy through rigorous, standards-based curricula. • PLTW’s approach centers on hands-on, real world projects. • Four-course Biomedical Science sequence that allows students to investigate the roles of biomedical professional. • Students work with the same high tech, cutting edge tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs. • Students use technology on a daily basis ranging from computerized lab equipment to accessing the curriculum, activities, assessments, grading and discussion boards.

  3. PLTW Biomedical Science Foundation Courses – Principles of Biomedical Sciences Honors (PBS) • In PBS, students investigate various health conditions. • They determine the factors that led to the death of a fictional person. • They investigate lifestyle choices & medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. • The activities & projects introduce students to human physiology, medicine & research processes. • This course provides an overview of all of the courses in the Biomedical Sciences program. • Occurs in the 10th grade.

  4. PLTW Biomedical Science Foundation Courses – Human Body Systems Honors (HBS) • Students examine the interactions of human body systems. • Students design experiments, investigate the structures & functions of the human body. • Students use data acquisition software to monitor body functions. • Student explore science in action. • Occurs in the 11th grade.

  5. PLTW Biomedical Science Foundation Courses – Medical Interventions Honors (MI) • Students investigate a variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis & treatment of disease. • The course is a “How-To” manual for maintaining overall health & homeostasis in the body. • Students explore how to prevent & fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; prevent, diagnose & treat cancer; & prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. • Students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices & diagnostics. • Occurs in the 12th grade.

  6. PLTW Biomedical Science Capstone Course – Biomedical Innovations Honors (BI) • Students design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century. • Students work through progressively challenging, open-ended problems, addressing topics such as clinical medicine, physiology, biomedical engineering and public health. • Students have the opportunity to work on an independent project and present their work to an audience of STEM professionals. • Occurs in the 12th grade.

  7. PLTW Biomedical Science - Assessments • Each PLTW course concludes with a national End-of-Course assessment. • In 2018, 98% of Walnut high School PLTW students successfully completed these exams.

  8. WHS Project Lead the Way Pathways PLTW IBCP 11th & 12th OR

  9. Project Lead the Way – Biomedical Science • Continue in the PLTW Program – courses taken: • Human Body Systems – 11th Grade • Medical Interventions – 12th Grade • Biomedical Innovations – 12th Grade

  10. International Baccalaureate Career-related Program (IBCP) • The IBCP is a program that incorporates the vision and educational principles of the IB into a unique program specifically developed for students who wish to engage in career-related learning. • IBCP Course Requirements: • Minimum of two IB Diploma Program courses • IBCP Core: • Service Learning • Personal & Professional Skills Course • Reflective Project • Language Development (World Language) • PLTW Courses – continue sequence of courses.

  11. PLTW Biomedical Science – Admittance Process • Be a 9th grade student in Biology or Biology Honors receiving a “B” or better. • Have a 3.00 GPA in core academic courses • Turn in a completed application to your GLC or Mrs. Barbie Cole by February 8, 2019.
