  2. International Baccalaureate Diploma Program The IB Diploma Program is a comprehensive and rigorous pre-university course of study for the highly motivated secondary student. It was designed to develop the individual talents of young people molding them into truly well-rounded, well-educated individuals who are aware that they are members of a complex, global society.

  3. Is the IB Diploma Programme right for me? If you want the best possible preparation for success in college, then the answer is… Yes!

  4. Key findings from research on the impact of IB programmes in the Americas • Universities have long recognized they have a problem with high drop-out rates after the freshman year in college. • Students are simply not prepared for the rigors of universities courses. • Universities recognize that IB students are among the most prepared to succeed in college. • The IB has collected data and published research indicating that IB students are much less likely to drop out of college and have a much higher graduation rate than the national average. In one study, 98% of IB Diploma graduates continued on to their second year of college and had overall four-year graduation rates of 79% compared to the national average of 39%.

  5. Bergeron, L. 2015. Diploma Programme students’ enrollment and outcomes at US postsecondary institutions 2008–2014. Bethesda, MD, USA. International Baccalaureate Organization.

  6. Another thing to consider… IB students tend to be accepted to universities at much higher rates than non-IB students.

  7. Full reports and additional research and data is available at www.ibo.org/research Stanford University Admissions Officer, Debra Von Bargen talks about the IB Diploma Programme both from the perspective of being a parent of an IB student and as the Assistant Dean of Admissions of Stanford University in the following video:

  8. Advantages of completing the IB Diploma Programme • Universities see the IB Diploma program as the most rigorous program available to students. • Potential Savings in College Tuition: • Completing the full IB diploma with a score of 30 or above can allow students to earn credit for all SL & HL exams passed. • University of California System – awards 30 quarter units - ~$13,500 (Tuition - ~$13,400/year) • Chapman University – awards minimum of 21 semester units - ~$40,750 (Tuition - ~$46, 500/year) • University of La Verne – awards up to 32 semester units - ~$38,500 (tuition - ~$38,500/year) • USC – awards 20 semester units of elective credit - ~$28,000 (Tuition - ~$49,450/year)

  9. 11. The IB program is one of the best ways to prepare for college. If students score at least 30 points to earn their IB diploma, UCs will essentially give them credit for their freshman year of college. These students often finish college in 3 years at a substantial savings for their families. Many universities give credit for HL courses and some will give credit for SL courses. Universities will now only give credit for AP classes if the students score a 4 or a 5 on their AP exams and many universities will only give credit for a 5 on their AP exams. IB students can take AP courses but only IB students may take IB courses. IB students have priority when signing up for certain WHS AP classes such as AP Biology. Many IB classes are offered as combination classes with AP so IB students can take BOTH the IB exam and AP exam (ex. IB Biology HL/AP Biology, IB Chemistry HL/AP Chemistry, IB Psychology HL/AP Psychology, IB Math HL/AP Calculus) Only IB students can take TOK. IB students learn time management skills that serve them well once they are in college. IB students form strong bonds with their IB friends that provides a great support system. Top Reasons to be in IB:

  12. The IB Diploma Programme at WHS • WHS has one of the best IB Programs in the state • Our students score well above the worldwide averages • 2018 Statistics: • WHS IB student average exam score 4.97 (Worldwide average was 4.79) • WHS IB students achieved their diplomas with an average score of 31 (Worldwide average was 29) • WHS IB Diploma pass rate 88% (Worldwide Diploma pass rate 78%)

  13. Selection Process for Admittance To IB Diploma Program • Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher will progress to the IB Diploma Program. • Students with a GPA of 2.99 or below will not continue in the program.

  14. Requirements to Earn an IB Diploma • To complete the IB Diploma, students must take a course and pass the exam from the 6 different Groups: • Group 1 – Studies in Language and Literature (English A: Literature) • Group 2 – Language Acquisition (Language B - Foreign Language) • Group 3 – Individuals and Societies • Group 4 – Sciences • Group 5 – Mathematics • Group 6 – Elective • Students also take Theory of Knowledge (TOK) • Students complete an Extended Essay (Research Project) facilitated and supervised by a faculty advisor • Students complete Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) supervised by a faculty advisor

  15. Course Plan for the Junior and Senior Year • Students will take 3 courses at the Higher Level (HL) and 3 courses at the Standard Level (SL) • All HL courses are two-year classes • SL courses (with a few exceptions such as the Foreign Language classes) are one-year classes • All students take English at the Higher Level (HL) – this is their Group 1 course • All students take their Foreign Language (2-year course) at the Standard Level (SL) – this is their Group 2 course • Students will then chose two other HL courses (exams will be taken the senior year) and two other SL courses (exams taken either the junior or senior year depending on the student’s choice of courses and schedule) from Groups 3 – 6 • Students should choose their HL courses in their strongest subject areas

  16. Course Options • Group 1 – all students take English A: Literature HL (2-year course) • Group 2 – all students take Language B SL (Foreign Language – 2-year course) – Options: • Spanish, German, French, or Chinese – year 3 and 4 (most students may take the AP Foreign Language exam) • Group 3 (Individuals and Societies) – students can choose from: • History HL (students may take AP US History exam) • History SL • Psychology HL (1st year is AP Psychology – students may take the AP Psychology Exam) • Economics SL (students may take AP Econ exam) • *Students must take US History as a graduation • requirement – History HL/SL will fulfill this requirement

  18. Course Options • Group 5 (Mathematics) – Students have 3 Options: • Math HL (2-year course) – This is the most challenging IB Math course for students who are very strong in math. Taken during the 11th & 12th grade year. (Equivalent to AP Calculus AB (year 1) + AP Calculus BC + IB Specific Coursework (year 2)) • Students may take both the AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC exams • Pre-requisite courses for Math HL: • Geometry • Algebra 2 Honors • Math Analysis Honors

  19. Group 5 (Mathematics) continued • Math SL (1–year course) – Usually completed during the 11th grade but can be taken in the 12th grade. • Two Math SL Options: • Math SL combined with AP Calculus AB – This course is for students who are strong in math but may not wish to take the 2 year Math HL course.
