  1. A Separate Peace Presentation Ashleigh Cloud Emma Busko The Secret Identity of Gene Forrester

  2. Thesis Statement Although the Gene at Devon has no idea who he is, and readers only get a glimpse of his true identity, the adult Gene is able to reflect more honestly on his previous actions.

  3. At the Beach “I should have told him then that he was my best friend also and rounded off what he had said. I started to; I nearly did. But something held me back.” Page 48 Gene is aware of his true feelings for Finny, he wants to be his best friend, but he knows that deep down inside he hates him. Gene can not tell Finny that they are not actually friends because he can not stand to disappoint people.

  4. Playing Dress Up “One evening when I was dressing for dinner in this numbed state of mind, an idea occurred to me, the first with any energy behind it since Finny feel from the tree.” Page 62 Gene is so unaware of who is he that he finds himself dressing up in Finny’s clothes. Knowles adds this passage to show how insecure Gene is.

  5. Finny’s House “I jounced the limb. I caused it. I deliberately jounced the limb so you would fall off.” Page 70 Gene is trying to explain to Finny that he caused Finny to fall, but Finny refuses to believe it because he does not understand how is “best friend” would want to do something to deliberately hurt him.

  6. The Confrontation “A swell guy, except when the chips are down. You always were a savage underneath.” Leper is aware of Gene’s true identity. Gene is taken back by the fact that someone is actually aware of the real Gene.

  7. Conclusion • The adult Gene is aware of his true motivations whilst attending Devon, but the adolescent Gene had no idea who he was, or what the reasoning was for his past actions.
