John Knowles • Served in the military before attending Yale • Graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Yale University in 1949 • Served on the Daily Yale News • He wrote articles in various things before becoming a full-time write in the 1950s • Was a writer in the 1960s at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at Princeton University

Summary Grown-up Gene flashes back to his years at Devon Skips school for a trip to the beach with best friend, Finny Boys jump from the tree branch into the river They form a secret club called “Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session” Gene thinks Finny is out to get him Finny falls out of a tree and everyone thinks Gene shook the branch and made him lose his balance

Summary • Gene becomes friends with Brinker Hadley • Shovel railroad to get money during the war and the boys talk about enlisting • Finny is back at school and Gene forgets what is important and the two train for the 1944 Olympics • Finny trains Gene because Dr. Stanpole says Phineas will be unable to play sports • Leper joins the army but later sneaks away and sends a telegram for Gene • Brinker investigates Finny falling out of a tree • Finny leaves in tears and falls down stairs and breaks his leg once again
