  1. RULESbyCynthia Lord Tyler Krisher

  2. About the Author • She was born in New Hampshire and now she lives in Maine • She and her sister wrote her first song when she was 4 years old. The name of the song was ‘Ding Dong the Cherries Sing ‘ • She wrote 3 books: Rules, Hot Rod Hamster and Touch Blue • She won 2 awards The 2007 Newberry Honor Book and The Schneider Family Book Award

  3. Setting • This story is set in the present • There are multiple settings: • The Clinic • Catherine’s house • Catherines friend Kristi’s house

  4. Characters • Catherine – is the main character. She got caught drawing pictures of Jason. Jason’s mother made Catherine apologize to Jason for drawing him and that is how Catherine and Jason became friends. Catherine also made a book of rules for her brother David. • Jason – is a handicapped boy in a wheelchair. He cannot talk so he has a big booklet of word cards that he points to. • Kristie – is Catherine’s new neighbor and they became friends. • David – is Catherine’s younger brother. He has autism. He takes physical therapy and he hates loud scratchy noises.

  5. Plot • Catherine’s family revolves around David’s disabilities. • Catherine got caught drawing a picture of Jason’s face in the clinic. She had to apologize to him. Jason did not like Catherine in beginning. They started to get to know each other better and became friends. • Catherine wants a normal life instead of always having to take care of her brother. She made a rule book for David so he would not have embarrassing behavior. The rule book helped David. • Catherine always hoped for a friend that lived close by and she found one in this story. • At the end of the book she asked herself and her friends what is normal?

  6. Conflict/Resolution • David vs. Catherine • David sometimes embarrasses Catherine in public. Catherine made David a rule book to follow so that he would not embarrasses himself or her anymore. One rule in the book is ‘No toys in the fish tank’. • Jason vs. Catherine • Jason dislikes Catherine because she drew a picture of him and he thought she was making fun of him. She apologized but he still disliked her. Then at the clinic she started talking to Jason a lot and then they became friends because they got to know each other.

  7. Theme The theme is that Catherine makes a rule book for her autistic brother. During the book David embarrasses himself and Catherine by doing silly things. Whenever she sees or thinks about something that David would do she would write it down in the rule book. By the end of the book David started listening to her rules and stopped embarrassing himself and his sister.

  8. Personal Book Review I really liked the book Rules. It was fun to read. This book is about a girl who wanted a normal life. The rules that she wrote in her book were funny. By the end of this story she had two good friends, Jason and Kristi. By the end of the book her brother stopped embarrassing her. I would recommend this book more to a girl than to a boy.
