  2. Why advocate for public policies? • Policy can affect our lives in very profound ways. • A decision or action made by government (local, state and federal) that addresses a problem or issue. • It shows both action and inaction, implying very deliberate choices between alternatives.

  5. State Policy General Food Fund Program • Supports Regional Food Banks • Food boxes and meals sites General Assistance Program/Bridge • Helps childless adults, including seniors • Support while applying for SSI/SSDI

  6. Federal Policy Older Americans Act • Promotes independence & provides a continuum of care • Meals on Wheels • Senior Nutrition Meal Sites • Reauthorization in 2013

  7. Federal Policy SNAP – Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program • Food dollars for 800,000 Oregonians • 167,176 seniors (Nov. 2012) • Average benefit seniors: $90/month • Reauthorization likely in 2013
