BARACK OBAMA, CNN interview, Nov. 20, 2006

  • I think the American people, at their core, are a decent people. I think that we still have prejudice in our midst but I think that the vast majority of Americans are willing to judge people on the basis of their ideas and their character. And in the case of the presidency, I think what is most important is whether the American people think that you understand their hopes and dreams and struggles and whether they think that you can actually help them achieve those hopes and dreams.

Moral sensitivity
Moral Sensitivity

  • The ability to recognize the presence of ethical issues, questions, and temptations.

  • Moral sensitivity is not something you should take for granted; not everyone has it.

  • In the business world, it is not unusual to see a career end for an ethical misdeed that he/she didn’t recognize as a matter of right or wrong.

Ethical judgement
Ethical Judgement

  • The ability to decide on the best or right course of action – to be able to make a responsible ethical judgment.

  • It’s important to be able to determine the best course of action in a situation.

  • But that’s not enough all by itself. Many times in life people know the right thing to do, they just don’t want to do it.

Ethical motivation
Ethical Motivation

  • Have the personal disposition to do the right thing; you have to have a strong inner desire to be a good person and to live a good life.

  • You have to want that more than wanting the short-term rewards that unethical decisions can sometimes bring

Ethical character
Ethical Character

  • Having the self-discipline and courage to follow through in difficult situations and to do what you know you should, even under extreme pressure.

How ethically mature are you
