Han dynasty • 206 B.C – 220 A.D 400 years or rule • Lasted due to strong central government • Bureaucracy-government made up of departments staffed by professionally trained people called bureaucrats • bureaucrats hired based on personal abilities not connections - meritocracy • All bureaucrats had to take special exams • Civil service exams – on the teachings of Confucius

  4. Han dynasty achievements • Improved long distance trade through the SILK ROADS • traded with all of Asia and Europe • Led to cultural diffusion. Buddhism spread to China from India • Extensive system of roads • paper

Confucius • Most important Chinese philosopher • Teachings became foundation for government during Han dynasty • Became a religious figure during this time period • Taught that social order, harmony and good government were possible if people followed the 5 key relationships and respected their elders and superiors

  6. The 5 key Relationships The superiors have the responsibility to teach by example and to take care of the inferiors. The inferiors have the responsibility to honor and obey the superiors. • Confucius also emphasized FILIAL PIETY: • Respect for parents and ancestors • Devoting one’s self to parents during their lifetime and honoring their memories after death through certain rituals – ancestor veneration
