  2. Introduction • Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that usually start in the squamous cells lining the mouth, voice box (larynx), throat (pharynx), salivary glands, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. • These cancers are grouped together due to their location and because head and neck surgeons – also known as otolaryngologists • Head and neck cancer is more likely to happen in adults over the age of 50 and is twice as likely to occur in men. 3. Risk Factors Include: • Age • Gender • Alcohol and tobacco use • Radiation or asbestos exposure • Poor oral hygiene • Ethnicity, especially of Asian descent (nasopharynx cancer) • Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection Contact No: +91 9049935685 Email : dr.jagdish3007@gmail.com

  4. Head and neck cancers include: • Cancers of oral cavity including Tongue cancer, Ca buccal mucosa, floor of mouth, • Cancer of Oropharynx including tonsil, pharynx, base of tongue and soft palate. • Cancer of Hypopharynx including post cricoid region, pyriform fossa epiglottis. • Cancer of Larynx (Sound box) Contact No: +91 9049935685 Email : dr.jagdish3007@gmail.com

  5. Causes of Head and neck cancers Major causes of head and neck cancer include tobacco chewing, Gutkha, Pan masala, smoking bidi and cigarette and alcohol consumption. Second important cause is human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Infection of Ebstein bar virus (EBV) can cause nasopharyngeal cancer. Ill fitting dentures and sharp teeth can cause tongue cancer. 6. Symptoms of head and neck cancers Symptoms of head and neck cancer include non-healing ulcer in mouth or throat, Mass or lump in mouth, difficulty in swallowing, change in voice, pain in ears, bleeding through nose and swelling over neck. If any of these symptoms are present please consult oncologist. Contact No: +91 9049935685 Email : dr.jagdish3007@gmail.com

  7. Head and neck cancer: Diagnoses • To confirm a diagnosis of cancer and determine if it has spread, you may undergo endoscopy, head MRI, CT of the sinuses, head CT, panoramic dental x-ray, dental cone beam CT, PET/CT or chest imaging. • If none of these tests indicate cancer, no further action may be needed. However, your doctor may want to monitor your condition if your symptoms persist. If an abnormality is found and tests do not confirm it is benign, your doctor may order a biopsy. 8. Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer • Treatment for head and neck cancer depends on its size, type, location, growth rate and your general health. Options include radiation therapy, surgery, chemotherapy or a combination of the three. • Radiation therapy is the backbone of treatment of head and neck cancers. Chemotherapy might be needed to enhance effect of radiation therapy. Sometimes surgery might be needed in sites such as oral cavity. Contact No: +91 9049935685 Email : dr.jagdish3007@gmail.com

  9. Types of Radiation Therapy: • External beam therapy (EBT): a method for delivering a beam of high-energy x-rays or proton beams to the location of the tumor. The radiation beam is generated outside the patient (usually by a linear accelerator for photon/x-ray and a cyclotron or synchrotron for proton beam) and is targeted at the tumor site. These radiation beams can destroy the cancer cells, and conformal treatment plans allow the surrounding normal tissues to be spared. Contact No: +91 9049935685 Email : dr.jagdish3007@gmail.com

  10. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT): an advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy that utilizes computer-controlled x-ray accelerators to deliver precise radiation doses to a malignant tumor or specific areas within the tumor. The radiation dose is designed to conform to the three-dimensional (3-D) shape of the tumor by modulating—or controlling—the intensity of the radiation beam to focus a higher radiation dose to the tumor while minimizing radiation exposure to healthy cells.
