  2. What is Equality? • Equality is not about treating everyone in • the same way • It is recognising that people’s needs are met in different ways

  3. Equality • A recent amendment to the Race Relations Act adds a duty for us to actively: • Promote race equality and avoid race discrimination, • How you can avoid race discrimination?

  6. Equality • Equality focuses on those areas covered by the law namely the key areas of: • Race • Gender • Disability

  8. Diversity ‘Diversity' is much more than just a new word for equality = Diversity management benefits associates By Creating a fair and safe environment where everyone has access to opportunities and challenges

  9. Diversity A diversity approach recognises: = Values and manages difference = Thus enabling all employees to contribute and realise their full potential

  10. Diversity A diverse workforce is a reflection of a changing world and marketplace = Diverse work teams bring high value to organisations

  11. Diversity Respecting individual differences will benefit the workplace by increasing work productivity. =

  12. Diversity FIRST: Managers must understand discrimination and its consequences = SECOND: Managers must recognize their own cultural biases and prejudices = FINALLY: managers must be willing to change the organisation if necessary

  13. Diversity Organisations need to learn how = to manage diversity in = the workplace to be = successful in the future (Flagg, 2002) & (Koonce, 2001)
