WHY: Surgeon General Health Advisory • “Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk… • It’s important to know that this threat is completely preventable • Radon can be detected with a simple test and fixed through well-established venting techniques.” (2005) • EPA radon action level is 4 pCi/L School Radon Training & Support System

  3. School Radon Training & Support System • Hybrid created specifically for schools in 2015 • Friendly, voluntary, effective • Based upon info from U.S. EPA, IDPH ANSI-AARST, and SRTSS/school input School Radon Training & Support System

SRTSS Objectives • Learn how to test for school radon ourselves • Provide a healthy indoor school environment • Prevent radon-induced lung cancer • Facilitate an ongoing school radon testing program • Save $ testing and, if needed, mitigating • Have fun • Walk out ready to roll School Radon Training & Support System

Iowa Cancer Consortium Grants • Enabled schools to prioritize • 19Iowa school districts voluntarily participated in 2017-18 • Received matching grant $ to begin or sustain school radon testing cycles • Radon mitigation assistance fund to be shared among school districts as needed School Radon Training & Support System

SRTSS Results 2017-18 • 36 buildings tested • 20 buildings had results BELOW 4 pCi/L (56%) • 16 buildings had some results at or ABOVE the EPA’s action level of 4 pCi/L (44%) • 9 buildings determined the need for active mitigation • ICC grant covered all or majority of costs for 5 buildings to be mitigated School Radon Training & Support System

Progress + More Work to Do! • So far, thanks to Iowa schools participating inSRTSS, an estimated 41,110students are safer from radon. • Plus the staff and community members who support them • 2015-16: 9,209 students • 2016-17: 15,312 students • 2017-18: 16,589 students • Iowa public schools educate 485,150 students (Source: 2016-17 Certified Enrollment Summary By District, Iowa Department of Education) School Radon Training & Support System
