5. Change…..a scary thing! Junior High and High School are very different:
6. Differences Con’t. Students must learn to be organized
7. The chance of a student who does not pass the ninth grade making it to graduation decreases by nearly 80%.
8. Research indicates that the Ninth Grade is the most difficult and the most important transitional period students experience in their academic life.
9. The Reality Is……. Some Freshmen Just Don’t Know…..
What to wear and how to dress
How to carry their books
How to act like a high schooler
How to make friends
That grades really do matter
That getting involved is fun and important
10. Research indicates that Freshmen are concerned about the 4 L’s Looks
11. Freshmen that get involved in school are…. Less likely to be retained in 9th grade
More likely to complete high school in four years
Less likely to have attendance, discipline, and academic problems
More likely to be connected to the school
More likely to be identified and receive remedial help
Less likely to bully or tolerate bullying from others
12. The Good News is…..You are the key to your child’s success in High School! Suggestions:

21. TOP TEN MISTAKES
Everyone makes mistakes, but if you can avoid these TOP 10 mistakes as you begin your freshman year, you’ll be in much better shape. (www.petersons.com)
22. TOP TEN 1. My freshman year doesn’t count. My senior year is far off, so if I mess up, I can always get back on track in the tenth grade. This can be said as, “I have no homework”.
2. I am picking this class because my friend is taking it.
3. I’ll just skip this class. One day won’t make a difference.
4. I don’t need to write down that assignment, I’ll remember it. Freshmen need to get use to using their school planner.
5. “I only missed one day and now the teacher want take it.”.
In high school the students are responsible for keeping track of missed assignments.
23. TOP TEN CONTINUED 6. The teacher did not tell me about that chapter test until
last night . Test taking skills in high school are vital.
7. Everyone else in the class understood what the teacher just said except me, so I won’t ask him/her to explain it.
8. I don’t want to talk to the teacher about the problems I am having with his/her in class .
9. There’s a situation at school that’s making me uncomfortable. I’ll just tell my friend about it and not go to the counselor’s or social worker’s office .
10. I can stay up later because I don’t need that much sleep .
Adolescents need 9 hours and 15 minutes of sleep. Children need 10 hours and adults need 8 1/4 hours. Stanford University
