What is Architectural Photography? Some may think that it is just a photograph of the interior or exterior of a building But a photograph is only considered an architectural photo if the primary purposeof the photo is to documentthe interior and exterior of a design created by an architect
LIGHTING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN PHOTOGRAPHS Overview • Two distinct categories of architectural photography • Interior • Exterior • We will be focusing on exterior photographs • Activity – We will be taking a field trip to Columbus, IN and walk around the town in order for you to get several shots. You will select one and explain why you think that it is a good architectural photograph. • This program will explain to you the different types of buildings you may see as well as give some tips for shooting • At the end there will be a short quiz! Where are we going? As you can see Columbus Indiana is just south of Indianapolis. It will take about two hours to get there and then expect to spend five hours there walking around and taking photographs. Here’s an interesting fact about Columbus it is ranked sixth in the US for architectural innovation and design by the American Institute of Architects This will return to the last slide viewed
Traditional-Style Houses Look for physical context Gardens are important Large Trees are good Avoid: The pillars are part the design and is a way to emphasize the design of the home Gardens are a type of physical context that emphasizes certain parts of the home In this photograph the trees point you towards the direction of the home, try to use trees in this manner in your photos • Trash Cans • TV Antennas • Garden Hoses • Air Conditioner • Seasonal Decoration • These tend to stick out and take attention away from the home Next Next Next Beginning of the slide
Beginning of the slide Contemporary Homes Here are some of the geometric shapes • Circle • Square • Rectangle Geometry Architects of contemporary homes use geometry in their designs. Look at the example to the left, notice the different shapes that are used in it. Click on the picture for a bigger photo.
Landscaping Settings Vantage Point A man made staircase going up the natural hill There are two types of settings in landscaping photographs, natural and man-made. A good landscaping photo usually has a combination of both types of settings You will usually have to take an unusual vantage point to create a good photo. Notice on the outside edge of the photo you see the edge of a shed. Large Buildings If Possible Useful Info If you were to do this for a job and not for a class you would want to talk to the proper authorities to get all of the temporary objects; garbage cans, vendors, etc. removed so that they will not be in the photo. These type of photos usually provide information that would be useful to anyone. One example would be the road located in front of the building in the bottom left corner.
