The Importance of photography in PR • Photography is one of the most important aspects of public relations because PR information may need to be well illustrated and pictures can sometimes be more informative than words.
The PRO should regard the camera as a communication tool just like a pen, word processor, laptop, telephone and the spoken word. • He/she should use the pictures taken to tell a story.
PR uses of photography • To build a photographic library so that prints are available to meet requests and for general use when pictures are needed. • To supply with news releases. • To illustrate feature articles. • As picture stories • For window and showroom displays
For displays in travelling exhibitions and on portable display panels at seminars, press receptions and other events. • For display- as enlargements (‘blow-ups’)- on exhibition stands • For illustrating house journals • For illustrating PR literature and visual aids.
Working with the photographer • The PR practitioner must know what sort of pictures are wanted, and be able to explain the exact requirements to the photographer. • All essential preparations should be made to assist the photographer.
Practical tips for producing good pictorial material. • Presentations and handshakes. • People at work • Human interest • Large objects • Busy Pictures • Name display.
Captions • All pictures must be captioned when sent to an editor, supplied to an exhibition press office or sent to anyone making a request for pictures.
Logo/Symbol Headline Description of content of photograph, map, drawing or other illustration, stating what it cannot say for itself, naming people from left to right.
Let’s do an activity! • Form two groups. • Choose a company (local/ international) that you would want to work in. • Pretend you are the PRO for that company. • Create a pictorial portfolio illustrating an interesting event that your company was apart of. • This portfolio should consist of ten pictures along with captions for each picture. • Present to class in a slide show.
