  1. Due Week 3 • Read pages 129 - 147 • What is the role of the House of Lords? • What is the role of the House of Commons? • What are the major British political parties. Whose interests do they represent? • I will collect these, but a mark will not be recorded.

  2. Due Week 4 • Read pages 341 - 357 • What are the major political parties in America, and how do their policies differ? • Briefly describe the three branches of Federal government. • How are the House of Representatives and the Senate elected? • Answers will be collected and marked.

  3. Due 2003.3.24 • Read pages 59 - 69 • Which groups of people settled in Britain during its early history, and at approximately what time? • Has the old Celtic language died? • How did feudalism begin in Britain? • Answers will not be collected.

  4. This week’s homework... • Answers will be discussed in class next week. • After that, answers will be collected. If the homework has been done, full marks will be given. • Copied homework will be given zero.

Due 2003.4.4 • Read pages 70 - 83 • Compare the feudal system of English between 1066AD and 1368AD with the social system of China during that period. • How was the power of England’s king reduced? • Do you think that the justice system developed during the time of Henry II was an improvement over the old system? Answers will be discussed in class, then collected.

Due week 7 • Read pages 84 - 97 • How were the ideas of the Renaissance different to the culture of the Middle Ages? • When Henry VIII started the Church of England, were the English people willing or unwilling to belong to this new church? • Why is Elizabeth I’s reign said to be the beginning of the British Empire? Answers will be discussed in class, but not collected. (You can write answers in Chinese if you prefer!)

Due week 8 • Read pages 98 - 116 • Do you think it strange that the British republic lasted for only about 11 years? • How did the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century affect peasant farmers and the upper class? • The People’s Charter of 1837 listed 6 points, but what was its overall aim? Answers will be discussed in class, then collected.

  8. Due week 9 • Read pages 117 - 128 • How was England’s colonisation of India different to the colonisation of America? • How did the British Empire affect China? • Did the two World Wars affect England positively or negatively? Answers will be discussed in class, then collected.

Due week 10 • Read pages 239 - 257 • For what main reasons did people immigrate to America in the early years? • Do you think America had good reason to start the War of Independence? • America’s army seemed weaker than the British. How did it eventually win? Answers will be discussed in class, then collected.

  10. Due week 12 • Read pages 258 - 280 • Answer in your own words. Don’t copy the book. • What factors led to the development of the Federal Government? (2 or 3 sentences) • In what ways did the size of the U.S.A. increase between 1800 and 1850? (about 3 sentences) • What was life like for a frontiersman? (2 or 3 sentences) Answers will be discussed in class, then collected.

Did they gain full equality afterwards? (2 or 3 sentences) • What are some characteristics of America’s economic development after the war? (2 or 3 sentences) Answers will be discussed in class, then collected.

  14. Question 2 (due week 15) • How did President Roosevelt try to solve the economic problems of the Great Depression? Sentences from the book: His first move was to ask Congress to pass the Emergency Banking Act. Another move was to enlarge employment and increase consumption. The farmers’ problem was dealt with by raising the price of farm products. Of course every country wants more employment and more economic activity! But how did Roosevelt achieve it?
