  2. Better Oral Care for Homeless People • Poor oral health affects overall general health, nutrition, quality of life, communication, appearance and employability; all of which compound the problems for individuals attempting to escape homelessness.

  3. “In the past I would watch people smile and their smile would be returned, but not for me. I was embarrassed to laugh in public and ashamed to smile in front of my daughters. Toothlessness only lowered my self-esteem which never lifted from rock bottom - until now.”

  4. There’s work still to be done • An Action Plan for Improving Oral Health and Modernising NHS Dental Services (2005) stated that improving the oral health of homeless people was a priority.

  5. National Oral Health Priority Groups Strategy, 2012 For individuals and families experiencing homelessness, simple things which are normally taken for granted by those with a permanent home, such as keeping clean, and finding and preparing food, are not always easy.

  6. Health and Homelessness Standards, 2005 • Improving the health of homeless people requires long-term plans. • Homeless people are among the most disadvantaged in our society, with poorer health and lower life expectancy than those who lead more settled lives.
