  3. What is PMP? Project Management Professional (PMP) is one of the most popular certifications across the globe offered by Project Management Institute (PMI) . The PMI defines PMP® as an application of techniques, skills and knowledge to effectively execute projects. Thus, the PMP certification can make any professional stand out from the crowd.

  4. Eligibility Criteria for PMP • Professional with working experience in project management can appear the PMP certification. Below are the PMI defined criteria for PMP aspirants: • Secondary degree with minimum 5 years of experience in project management with 7500 hours leading projects and 35 hours of PDU. • Higher degree with minimum 3 years of experience in project management with 4500 hours leading projects and 35 hours of PDU. • Project management experience can involved experience in any of the five stages of the project management lifecycle i.e. planning, initiating, monitoring, directing and closing.To earn 35 required PDUs, individuals can take project management training.

  5. Form Filling • The next step is to fill up the exam form for PMP. Create an account at the PMI official website and start filling online application from listed under my PMI section. Once started the application, you will get 90 days to complete the application that includes the following information: • Personal information, including name, address, contact info, etc. • Education degree • Contact hours certification • Brief about experience of project management • After successfully submitting the application form, you will receive the acceptance email within a week.

  6. Fees and Membership On submission of application form, you will receive an email from the PMI to pay the PMP exam fees. The exam fee for PMI member is $405 and for non-member its $555 (this might be change after the launch of 6th version of PMBOK Guide). The PMI membership brings you a lot of benefits at just $129 annual fee. Being a PMI member, you will get a digital copy of PMBOK® Guide; get access to on-demand webinars, project and business management books and peer-written and reviewed articles.

  7. Audit Process of PMI® • After completing the form and paying exam fee, you will immediately get to know whether your application is selected for an audit. If selected, you need to submit all required document to validate the details mentioned in your application form within 3 months: • Printed contact hour certificate • Education certificates (photocopy of university/college degree) • Authorized letter from the contact person listed in experience section. (separate envelops for each letter)

  8. Scheduling an Exam After completing all the formalities related to application, you can schedule your examination through official website of PMI. Login to the PMI® Certification system and choose the mode of examination either Computer-based Test (CBT) or Paper-based Test (PBT). You can choose any date within 1 year of submitting the fee.

  9. Examination PMP certification is a closed book exam. It contains 200 multiple-choice questions that you need to attempt within 4 hours. 25 questions from these questions are pretest questions that don’t score any marks for you and are included to test the validity of future questions. To pass the certification exam, you have to correctly answer at least 137 questions. If you don’t clear the exam in the first attempt, you can reattempt for the exam. An applicant gets 3 attempts within the period of one year. After clearing the PMP certification exam, you will be able to take your PMP® certificate within 6-8 weeks.

  10. Certification Renewal The PMP credentials comes with 3 years validity and to renew the credential one need to earn and submit extra 60 PDUs every 3 years to PMI. Each dedicated hour for professional development activities will offer you one PDU. However, you can earn these PDUs in the certification year itself.
