  1. Ch 1.2 – Order of Operations and Evaluating Expressions

  2. Let’s Review! Write an algebraic expression for the following phrases. • 5 less than the product of 3 and a number t. • Twice the sum of a number b and 8.

  3. Try to translate the algebraic phrase into a verbal phrase. • 4 – (d / 6) • (x + 7) / 2

  4. New Vocabulary • Power: made of two parts, a base and an exponent. • Base: the number you are multiplying by itself in a power. • Exponent: how many time you multiply the base to itself.

  5. Vocabulary • Simplify: a numerical expression when you it with its single numerical value. • Evaluate: replacing each variable with a given number, then simplify the expression.

  6. What is the simplest form for the following expressions. • 53 • 0.45 • (⅜)4

  7. Which one is correct? Why? A) 2 + 3 x 5 = 5 x 5 = 25 B) 2 + 3 x 5 = 2 + 15 = 17

  8. Order of Operations • Perform operations inside grouping symbols. Grouping symbols: parenthesis, brackets, absolute values, fraction bars • Simplify powers. • Multiply and divide left to right. • Add and subtract left to right.

  9. Simplify • 17 – 36 / 4

  10. What is the value of the following expressions for x = 3 and y = 5. • x + y2 – xy • (y – x) + 4(xy)

  11. Evaluate the expressions for a = 2 and b = 6 • (a + b)2 • a2 + b2 • What can you say about #1 and #2?

  12. Homework • Order of Operations Worksheet • There are no algebraic expressions. • SHOW ALL YOU WORK!! (or no credit!) • Make sure you know how to write algebraic expressions from verbal phrases!!!!!
