  2. Getting cheap electric guitars is not really such a bad thing. A few years ago, my little brother used to play in a pretty decent local band. Of course, I went to see him quite a few times and being the aggressive guitarist that he was, he was forever breaking strings and dropping picks. When you get more money you will be able to buy more equipment and employ 'roadies'; however for the vast majority of musicians breaking guitar strings and dropping picks is pretty commonplace in a live music setting. • So, on the basis that I have witnessed, on numerous occasions, my brother gets out of these situations, maybe the following will be of some use, I hope so: • theguitarwarehouse.com.au

  3. The first thing I recall was that the whole band, no matter if members changed they still acted as a team. They were well rehearsed and as such could recognise when something was not sounding right with one of the parts. This I would say was the most important element, what follows are the ways to get out of the hole. • If you drop a pick, and there are no spares immediately to hand, then you need to be able to do without. Play with your fingers. I believe that wonder blues guitarist Jeff Beck dropped his pick, used his fingers and then never returned to using one. This could be a myth, but it is not beyond the realms of possibility. • You will be able to improvise for a while, but a whole stage set will probably demand all six strings on your guitar. Therefore you are going to need to carry spares for everything. Spare strings, picks and even cables should always be carried. This is where the cheap electric guitars come into the picture, because you are likely to be using your new guitar, so take them and make sure that they are properly tuned up! • theguitarwarehouse.com.au

  4. If you need to spend a little time off the stage getting things together, then my brother's band used to make sure that they could all play something with any one of the other members missing, even the drummer. That way they could keep the audience interested as there is nothing worse than silence and everyone heading to the bar. • Most people will tend to snap their thinnest string so the advice here is to go up from a 9 gauge to a 10. Just that slight extra is a little sturdier. If you are a hard 'strummer,' there are other techniques that produce the same impact. • theguitarwarehouse.com.au

  5. In terms of the strings you should really be looking at the type of picks you do use. If you use a metal pick that has no flexibility and you have a strong picking technique, then the picks act like a carving knife on the strings which will cause more breakages as would burrs in the saddle. • In summary, when you are a member of a band you are part of a team. That team only functions when all the parts become one coherent sound. You can improvise for certain short periods, but if you own unreliability starts to become an issue, chances are you will be packing up your cheap electric guitars and looking for some new band-mates. • theguitarwarehouse.com.au
