PREGINET • Philippine Research, Education, and Government Information Network • 19 access points nationwide • Links 64 institutions in the Philippines (as of May 2003) • Connected to AI3 (1.54Mbps + shared 6Mbps/512kbps) • Connected to APAN Tokyo NOC (512kbps thru PHnet; will be upgraded to 6Mbps within this year in cooperation with MAFFIN)

Updates • Initiation of the Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture – DA, DOST, UPOU, other state universities and colleges, IRRI, ICRISAT • Technology and information services for agriculture extension workers and farmers • Will use FITS Centers (currently more than 100 nationwide) • Will use existing network infrastructure – PREGINET and DA-NIN, also commercial ISPs • Hybrid rice; later corn, sugarcane, coconut, vegetables and rootcrops

  5. Updates • Upgrade of MAFFIN link to 6Mbps by November this year

  6. Other Activities • Digital Library Project – with the National Library of the Philippines, University of the Philippines Libraries, Science Libraries Network, DA Library • Mirror services over PREGINET – Biomirror, S*Alliance (bioinformatics courseware), Libweb
