  1. Animation Methods and Assignment

  2. Thaumatrope • Everyone will make one of these • Simple illusion – not really full animation. • Worth 40 points

  3. Thaumatrope

  4. Kineograph • Usually called a “flip-book” • Each image is slightly altered from the last to give the illusion of movement • Need at least 50 drawings • This one is an optional method – worth 160 points.

  5. Kineograph

  6. Phenakistascope • Spinning image to create repeating animated image • Need at least 12 images • Must spin freely • Worth 160 points (also optional)

  7. Phenakistascope

  8. Zeotrope • Another spinning image, but can be 3D or flat • The slits in the paper act as a strobe light • On 3D models, strobe lights are used to create the illusion • Need 12 images • Worth 160 points (another option for you)

  9. Zeotrope

  10. More Zeotropes

  11. Stop Motion • Can be done with a simple camera (iphones have an ap) • Each shot is slightly altered to create the illusion of movement • Claymation is done like this (ParaNorman, Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit and so forth) • Minimal 100 frames (more is better) • Worth 160 points (yet another option)

  12. Stop Motion

  13. Computer Animation • Blender, PIVOT, Stykz, etc. can be used • Minimal 100 frames • Need to email me the file and program name used (must be a free download type program or I can’t view it) • As with the others, it is an option worth up to 160 points

  14. Elaborate example

  15. Any others? • If you have an animation method not mentioned here (there are still several), ask me what I will require for that one • Would also be worth up to 160 points like the rest

  16. Conclusion • 2 assignments are due on this project • #1- A Thaumatrope for 40 points • #2- Any other method of animation for 160 points • Total of 200 points for this animation unit • You will have a little over a month to complete both projects • Good luck! 
