The History of Alcohol. Prohibition was the time from 1920- 1933 when the manufacture and sale of alcohol was illegal. Alcohol became illegal because of the work of the Temperance Society or “drys” that taught about the evils of alcohol.

  1. The History of Alcohol Prohibition was the time from 1920- 1933 when the manufacture and sale of alcohol was illegal Alcohol became illegal because of the work of the Temperance Society or “drys” that taught about the evils of alcohol.

Even though alcohol became illegal to make or sell, prohibition was a failure. • Speakeasies or illegal bars became more common than the legal ones that existed before prohibition • Smuggling- Alcohol was smuggled in from other countries. • Bootlegging- People made their own alcohol, which could cause blindness, “rotgut” and death • More violence and crime than before,which was difficult to enforce. The rise of organized crime, or the “mob” which smuggled and distributed illegal alcohol. In 1933 President Roosevelt repealed prohibition. What do you think would happen if there was a prohibition on tobacco today?

  3. About Alcohol... Alcohol is a depressant drug. It slows down the central nervous system. Alcohol is a legal drug for people who are 21 and older in the US, but that does not mean that it is always safe to use! Alcohol plays a part in HALF of all fatal car accidents, HALF of all murders, and ONE-THIRD of all suicides

The Types of Alcohol • The type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages • Often called grain alcohol (Made from ryes, wheat, corn) • Only “safe” to drink in small quantities ETHYL- • Poisonous and flammable • Called “wood” alcohol • Found in paint products, fuels and formeldehyde -Methyl • Type of alcohol often used as an antiseptic • Found in shaving creams, rubbing alcohol, etc. Isopropyl- Methyl and Isopropyl Alcohol are poisonous if swallowed!

How Ethyl Alcohol is Made: • The base of ALL alcoholic beverages. • The yeasts act on sugars (found in fruits) in the presence of water • How most wine and beer are made Fermentation- How alcoholic beverages with a greater amount of alcohol are made. Fermented alcohol is heated and broken down. Examples include vodka, gin and whisky Distillation- Proof- The measurement of alcohol content in distilled alcoholic beverages. The proof is = to 2x’sthe %of alcohol

  7. The 3 Main Forms of Alcohol Beer- Fermented alcohol from grains and malts. It usually contains from 3% to 6% alcohol Wine and Wine Coolers- Made from grapes or fermented fruit juices. Wine is usually about 7% - 14% alcohol. Wine coolers range from 4% to 11% alcohol Liquor- Made from distilled grains, fruits, and other crops. Liquors usually contain 40%-50% alcohol. Whisky, vodka, and rum are examples.
