  2. What is ISO / TC 211 ? • An international organisation to develop a family of standards in the field of geographic information • First Plenary Meeting : Olso, Norway , November 10-11, 1994

Global SDI Initiatives Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) to encourage the growth of compatible SDI capable of supporting collaboration on regional and global issues of importance Digital Earth help advance the state of technology to create a virtual representation of the planet Global Mapping to establish a set of spatial framework data coverage for the Earth

  5. NATIONAL SPATIAL DATA INFRASTRUCTURE • Establishment of a National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse • Development of standards • Development of procedures and partnerships to create a national digital data framework

WHAT IS A CLEARINGHOUSE? • a distributed, electronically connected network of geospatial data procedures, managers and users • each data producer is expected to describe available data in electronic form and prepare the metadata (data about data) • support search of geospatial data over the internet

  7. Why Are GI Standards Necessary ? • For data documentation, collection and exchange of geospatial data

Who Wants GI Standards ? • all businesses that produce, distribute or utilise spatial information benefit from spatial standards • ranges from decision support, data warehousing to modelling and simulation • application areas include automated mapping, geo-engineering, computed-aided drafting and design which support planning and infrastructures such as communication, transportation and utilities

  9. ISO / TC 211 • aims to establish a structured set of standards for information concerning objects/ phenomena that are directly/ indirectly associated with a location relative to the Earth • the standards may specify methods, tools and services for data management, acquiring, processing, analysing, accessing, presenting and transferring data between different users, systems and locations • shall link to appropriate standards for information technology and data where possible, and provide a framework for the development of sector - specific applications using geographic data

Objectives Of ISO / TC 211 • increase the understanding and usage of geographic information • increase the availability, access, integration, and sharing of geographic information • promote the efficient, effective, and economic use of digital geographic information and associated hardware and software system • contribute to a unified approach to addressing global ecological and humanitarian problems

Conclusion • The goal of ISO/TC 211 is to develop a family of international standard that will • support the understanding and usage of geographic information • increase the availability, access, integration and sharing of geographic information, enable inter-operability of geospatially enabled computer systems • and ease the establishment of geospatial infrastructures on local, regional and global level • ….. and cooperate with others in achieving this !
