The 8th District • Traditionally working class and owners of small businesses • First railway station in Budapest • Traditional arrival point for low status migrants to city • Interwar era: limit on rents • Post WW2: nationalisation of apartments, low rent, lack of resources for upkeep of housing stock • Serious crime issues, wide-spread prejudice

  3. Magdolna Quarter • 34 hectares • 12,000 residents • Largest metropolitan poverty area of Budapest • High frequency of crime and drug abuse

  4. Rév8 was founded in 1997. Owners Budapest City Council Local Government of Józsefváros, 8th District of Bp Tasks urban and social engineering, responsible for the regeneration of Józsefváros Budapest Magdolna Quarter Rév8 Zrt / 2008.07.16

Main elements of the integrated program Program #1 / Building renewal by involvement of the tenants Program #2 / Greenkeys project, Renewal of the Mátyás square Program #3 /Mátyás Square Community House ‘Glove Factory’ Program #4 / Educating program Program #5, #6, #7,/Crimeprevention program, Employment, entrepreneurs program, Community development program Budapest Magdolna Quarter Rév8 Zrt / 2008.07.16

  6. Dankó Utca apartments • Apartments renovated, attics finished, bathrooms added • 7 families total, of these 5 applied for Habitat loan and 4 pledged to participate in construction • 1 US volunteer team, 2 school teams • September-November 2009

  7. Karácsony Sándor utca • Loft for formerly homeless family • First floor painted with tenants • Windows insulated in a number of apartments

  8. Learnings • Social work and community development needed • Buildings in advanced stages of Rév8 program significantly better performing • Ability to pay back extremely low – complex poverty relief program • Failures: • Unpleasant volunteer experience • Difficulty to find good locations for volunteer builds • Pricing challenges
