Objectives The students will be able to • research the origin of the names hurricane, tornado, typhoon. • research the meteorological causes of hurricanes, tornadoes, or typhoons. • map the weather patterns of a hurricane, tornado or typhoon. • present the effects of a hurricane, tornado, or typhoon on populations and on the land in a multimedia format to club members and advisors.

  3. Background • Brainstorming session What is weather? (examples/causes/where does it occur?) • On-line weather sites Weathernet/KNTV/3D Forecast • Watch the weather for a week Look for patterns and come with questions

  5. Would you rather be in a hurricane, tornado, or typhoon? Why? Using the Internet, students look for pictures, stories, articles, etc. on which to base their decision. Document Sources in Virtual Notebook

  6. Lesson • Discuss reasons for storm selection Research causes of hurricane, tornado, or typhoon using the Internet, books, newspapers, interviews, magazines, etc. Learn about: -temperature -pressure -humidity -wind speed -cloud formation -geological aspects

  8. MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION Create a multimedia presentation: Lower grades: 5 page Power Point Presentation custom background, take photos and scan, import pictures, write text, cite sources. Middle grades: 7 pagePower Point Presentation custom background, take photos and scan, import pictures, write text, cite sources, create links to web sites, import sound.
