  2. Youwillwrite a 5 paragraphopinionessayansweringthequestion: “TowhatextentisManiacMageefact and/oropinion?”

  3. Your essay should contain: Paragraph 1 A definition of fact and opinion. A statement showing your answer to the question. General reasons or examples that support your opinion. A concluding sentence that leads the reader to the rest of the text.

  4. Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 • Each reason or example mentioned in paragraph 1 will be the topic sentence of each paragraph to come. • In the next three sentences (at least) of each paragraph you need to give examples using quotes from the book and facts from research that support your opinion. • In the last sentence of each paragraph you need to restate the main idea in such a way that you remind readers of your most important idea and ‘leave a mark’!

  5. Paragraph 5: Conclude by restating your position; this sentence could answer the question “How do we decide what is true?”. Write at least two sentences to restate the reasons you used to support your position. Write one last sentence in a strong and confident manner to leave a final mark on the reader on why you thought Maniac Magee was a fact and/or opinion text.

  6. You will be graded on Criteria A, B and C. • This means: • Sentences must have a subject and a predicate. • Adequate application of grammar rules such as the use of verb tenses and pronouns is essential. • Punctuation, capitalization and spelling will be assessed. • Use of the unit’s vocabulary should be present. • Basic organization and neatness rules should be applied as instructed by your teacher. • Each paragraph should be indented and quotation marks should be used to show quotes, along with the page number (Spinelli, p.___). • The book should be referenced at the end along with other references used, if necessary.
