  2. Minnesota State Graduation Requirements for Science three years of Science meet all standards in Earth, Life and Physical Sciences one class must be a year-long Biology class For the class of 2015 and beyond, one class must be a year-long Physics or Chemistry class.

  5. Pre-requisites for courses

Honors Biology • Biology is a state standards based laboratory course that studies living things from the microscopic to the macroscopic.  • The ultimate goal is to help students become scientifically literate citizens.  • Main Topics in Biology: • Nature of Science • Heredity • DNA • Protein Synthesis • Evolution/Natural Selection • Population Dynamics • Cells • Immune/Nervous System

  7. Honors Biology All students are expected to design formal research experiments and present their results and conclusion. We use resources and equipment in and around the school, including the Minnehaha Watershed for field studies.

  8. IB Biology SL • IB Biology is an upper level 2 year class for students that have already taken biology and chemistry. • Main topics include: Statistical Analysis, Cells, The Chemistry of Life, Genetics, Ecology and Evolution, Human Health and Physiology, and two other choice topics. • Students will participate in formal lab write ups as well as the Group 4 interdisciplinary project.

  9. Marine Ecology This class is an introduction to the ocean environment. We will focus on a coastal marine ecology of Florida and the Caribbean region. This is a laboratory based interdisciplinary science class. Students will construct a model coral reef in class and student writing topics will focus on the saltwater environment.

  10. Forensics Topics covered in Forensics include: • Evidence • Processing a Crime Scene • Fingerprinting • Hair and Fiber Analysis • Autopsy • DNA Analysis • Impressions and Tool Marks • Document Analysis

  11. Chemistry Main topics covered are: Atomic theory Periodicity Bonding States of matter Kinetics Acids and Bases Oxidation and Reduction Reactions Organic Chemistry Stoichiometry - mathematical calculations based mainly on balanced equations

  12. Physical Science • Physical Science includes one semester of Physics and one of Chemistry, which address the Minnesota physical science standards for high school. The ultimate goal is to help students become scientifically literate citizens. • Physical Science - Chemistry • Students will study chemistry concepts with processes and skills integrated throughout the semester in a standards-aligned, lab-based setting. Students will: • Investigate atomic theory • Explore matter, its properties, and its interactions • Study the Periodic Table • Investigate nuclear energy • Research nuclear power and fossil fuels • Experiment with chemical reactions • Study chemical bonding • Investigate solutions/mixtures and acids/bases • Describe the Law of Conservation of Mass and Energy • Explore thermodynamics • Design and conduct an original research project

  13. Physical Science - Physics Students will study physics concepts with processes and skills integrated throughout the semester in a standards-aligned, lab-based setting. Students will: Investigate motion Explore forces Study Newton’s Laws Explore kinetic and potential energy Investigate work and power Research electricity and its production Study the electromagnetic spectrum Study the solar system Examine research on stars and galaxies Explore evidence for the origin of the universe Design and conduct an original research project

  14. Physics This 1-year standards-based lab course is focused on how spacetime and mass & energy are related, transferred, and conserved. Algebra is used for problem-solving. Mechanics (1st and 2nd quarters) -Linear and Projectile Motion -Forces -Work & Energy -Momentum & Collisions -Gravity -Circular Motion Electromagnetism (3rd quarter) -Electric Fields and Potential -Electric Circuits -Magnetic Fields -Motors, Generators and Transformers Thermodynamics & Waves (4th quarter) -Heat & Temperature -Sound -Light

  15. IB Physics SL (Standard Level) Core and option topics: 1. Physical measurement 2. Mechanics 3. Thermal physics 4. Oscillations & Waves 5. Fields & Forces 6. Electric Currents 7. Energy, Power & Climate Change 8. Atomic & Nuclear Physics 9. Sight & Wave Phenomena 10.Relativity & Particle Physics. • This 2-year course provides a rigorous yet gently-paced introduction to the main principles of physics and emphasizes the development of conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability using algebra and trigonometry.

  16. AP Physics B / IB Physics HL yr 1 (Higher Level) This 1-year course provides a rigorous introduction to the main principles of Physics and emphasizes the development of conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability using algebra and trigonometry. Getting a 3 or higher (out of 5) on the AP test will get you 8 credits of Physics at the U of Minnesota and save you ~$2400 of tuition. I. Newtonian Mechanics (35%) II. Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics (15%) III. Electricity and Magnetism (25%) IV. Waves and Optics (15%) V. Atomic and Nuclear Physics (10%)
