  1. The Science Field Hockey Shauna-Kay Harrison Period 8 – P.E.

  2. Origin/ History • Though the actual origin of field hockey – or just hockey – is unknown, the common idea was central: “hitting a ball with a stick.” Archeologists have found 4,000 simplistic drawing of men playing hockey in the BeniHasan tombs in the Nile Valley of Egypt. At one point, different versions of the sport began popping up over Europe. England played “cambuca,” the Netherlands played “het kolven,” Scotland played “shinty,” and France played “jeu de mail.” Hockey became especially famous among the royalty; but not all of them. King Edward III of England set a decree in 1363 that stated: “Moreover, we ordain that you prohibit under penalty of imprisonment all and sundry from such stone, wood and iron throwing; handball, football, or hockey; coursing and cock-fighting, or other such idle games.” Women’s field hockey was started in British Universities in the 1880’s. The Molesey Ladies Hockey Club was founded in 1887. This club later made way for the International Federation of Women’s Hockey Associations (IFWHA) in 1927.

  3. Coin Toss: The Umpire starts the game with a coin toss. The home team gets to choose head/tail. Whoever wins the coin toss gets to decide the position of the ball at the start of the game, or the side of the field that they would prefer to stand guard. • Teams: Each team has 11 players; 10 field players and one goalie. They also have 5 extra players benched for each team. • Positions: Position is not stable. Teams can however can place players in three categories: defense, midfield, and attack. Positions vary also depending on division/league. • Uniform: A goalkeeper must wear a different uniform, as well as a helmet unlike their teammates. • Equipment: The right side of the hockey stick is round, the left side is flat. The ball can only be played on the left side, or on its edge. Rules & regulations

  4. Cover the Field: During a game, especially when on the defense side, actively cover the field. You and your teammates need to actively cover anything that needs quick attention. Be aware! • Dribbling: Yes, there is a [straight] dribbling in field hockey, but unlike basketball, it is simply running while keeping the ball at the end of the hockey stick. It is a great way to control the ball. Yet you also have a rotating dribble. This is rotating the hockey stick over the ball. • Opposing Guards: Guard each of the opposing team’s guards in strategic positions to cover their every move. • Guarding Goals: Set up a group of people to guard your goalie so that the opposing team cannot easily get a free score. It is best to stand in a circular structure when doing this. • Tackle: It is best to tackle from the sides top block in your opponent. Do not tackle quickly, but watch their every move. (In hockey, you cannot make contact with a person like football. Tackling in hockey is simply stealing the ball.) Though these are only basic rules, they cover a wide area. 5. The right side of the hockey stick is round, the left side is flat. The ball can only be played on the left side, or on its edge. There is only a right handed field hockey stick. The right hand is placed on the base of the grip. The left hand is used to turn and control the stick. The weight of the stick matters. For defense, they generally prefer hard hits; for the forwards, a light stick is best for easy movement and control. Last, most regular players (midfielders) use a medium stick, because it give maneuverability and hard hits. • The ball is made of plastic and must weigh 5 ½ oz to 5 ¾ oz. It must have a circumference of 8 13/16 inches to 9 ¼ inches. This is a little larger than a baseball. • The goalkeeper needs a helmet and leg pads which are not allowed to be more than 12 inches wide. • Players must wear mouth and shin guards that are made of light weight foam or plastic . Equipment Usage

  6. Ball control drills: Learn to trap the ball when its coming towards you so that no opponent can steal the ball. Do this by trapping the ball in the hook of the field hockey stick. • Passing, Shooting and Attacking:In hockey, moving fast is an essential skill. Hold your hand further down the hockey stick, lean forward, and move the ball forward. • Offensive and defensive drills and tactics: One trick is to move the stick quickly from one side of the ball to the other. Also, dribble the ball to have control over it and to keep it away from your opponent. To make a goal, do a golf swing. This gives you power, and drives the ball into the goal. • Practice these skills with another person, starting with simply passing the ball to one another. Drill & Skill Development
