  1. How to Control Rats from Turning Your Car Into a Potential Death Trap We all know that Rats build nestsin people’s homes and gardens. However, few are aware that they can even make their way into our cars, bringing in food and all sorts of trash that they collect to build their nests. It happens more often than you may realize. In fact, in July 2017, the Hindustan Times would report how the Mumbai fire brigade studied 860 vehicle fires in the past three years that led to nine deaths and left more than 14 people injured. What caused these car fires? According to Prabhat Rahandgale, the city fire brigade chief, “In a majority of cases, the wirings had ruptured because of rats.” Rats can gravitate towards cars when they start to feel that it may be a safe place to dwell. This is why vehicles that aren’t driven much and kept in the garage can be potential homes for rats. The same can be said for companies who have a fleet of vehicles in their lot that only get used when necessary. Rats are drawn even more to cars when the weather starts to change and they seek shelter from the cold. New cars are particularly appealing to rodents because these newer models use soy- based insulation for the wiring which is biodegradable, making them especially appetizing to rats compared to the conventional petroleum-based electrical insulation found in older model cars. And because Rats favour the car’s engine compartment, expect that they’ll tear up the internal

When rats live in your car, they start to bring in food and other nesting materials that can interfere with your car’s mechanisms, causing accidents when you least expect it. Because rats like to store their food, your engine could be a storage for discarded food and the build-up could further affect the way your car runs. Most importantly, Rats like to sharpen their teeth by gnawing on things. And if they were to do that to your car wires, the bare wires may touch each other and create a short circuit. Imagine if the rat chews their way around your car’s lighting system and you suddenly find yourself without headlights on a dark road. And what if the damage to the wiring ultimately cause a fire while you and your family were still in it? How to Prevent Rats from Building Nests in Your Car Keep your garage and its surrounding areas clean. Seal off all possible entry points where rats could gain access. The key is to reduce the number of places where they could potentially hide. Because rats are looking for a dark and warm place to nest, leave your car’s hood up when it’s parked in your garage to discourage them from entering. Don’t leave dog food lying around where rats can get it. Because rats absolutely love dog food, they will try to store it anywhere they can. And that could mean your car’s glove compartment and other empty spaces within your vehicle. Make your engine and the entrances leading it as unappealing to rats as possible. Rats hate the smell of cat litter, red pepper, dog hair, and peppermint oil. place. Don’t let your car sit too long unused as it makes them think it’s a safe and secure place to hide and build a home. However, if it’s already too late and realize that a rat is already living in your car and wreaking havoc, we at Sterling Pest Control Services highly suggest that you don’t attempt to start your engine as it could cause a fire or accident. Perhaps the biggest tip is to not give the rats the opportunity to build a nest in the first Because we specialize in both Proactive or Preventive Rodent Control Services, we can help you prevent an accident from happening by ensuring a rat never makes its way into your vehicle and can also help you get rid of one you may suspect is already living in your car.
