  2. Overview • Team Introductions • What is an Arborloo? • Why is the stand important? • Project Statement • Project Summary • Customer & Engineering Requirements • Project Plan • Stakeholders • Summary

  3. Team Introductions

  4. What is an arborloo? • Ecological outhouse • Pit dug & supports in place • Arborloo set up • Arborloo removed &tree planted • Combat deforestation in Haiti

  5. Why is the stand important? • Wind resistance during Type I hurricanes • Test collapsibility of arborloo • Ensure safety in case of dislodgement • Why is this a Senior Design project? • Engineering skillset required to ensure all objectives are met • CFD, Force Analysis, Safety Engineering, Modeling, Cost Efficiency • Set foundation for which all future arborloo designs can be tested off of

  6. Project statement The primary objective of this project is to design a scale model and a full-size test stand that will help determine the wind resistance of various arborloo designs. The scale model test stand should replicate the forces experienced by a Class I hurricane, and the results should be easily comparable to the lower speed, full-size results. Both test stands should allow for safe testing of various arborloo sizes, shapes, and materials.

  7. Project statement • Create test rig & procedure for scale testing • Simulate Type I hurricanes • Measure wind speed, forces • Create test procedure for full size testing • Recommendations for future design of arborloos

  8. Project Summary Objectives/Scope: • Determine the appropriate fluid and scale needed to replicate a Class I hurricane • Design a test stand than can be used for multiple different arborloo designs and configurations • Demonstrate reliable and repeatable results Deliverables: • Scale model and full-size test set-up and procedure • Test Plan • Means of comparing results from scale model and full-size testing • Design drawings and Bill of Materials • Assembly instructions • Clearly documented test results

  9. Project Summary Expected Project Benefits: • Arborloo designs can be tested to find the optimal design to be used in Haiti • Test stand can be used by other senior design groups to evaluate their arborloo designs Assumptions & Constraints: • Budget: $800 • Scale model must utilize existing fluid flow analysis equipment in KGCOE, while keeping current set-ups intact • Test stand must protect surrounding people and infrastructure from flying debris

  10. Project Summary Issues & Risks: • Project Understanding and Digesting By Team • Understanding of Class I hurricanes • Determining critical locations to measure moment and forces • Available Resources • Obtaining Resources • Order Parts/Hardware • Lead Time • Software • Modeling arborloo designs with CFD software • Sensors • Using and collecting data from sensors • Determining appropriate sensor types

  11. Customer Requirements • Demonstrate reliability and repeatability • Simulate wind speeds and forces of a Class 1 hurricane • Protect users and bystanders while testing • Protect other infrastructure and equipment from damage • Allow for different shapes and materials to be tested and compared • Allow for different weights and centers of gravity to be tested and compared • Utilize existing equipment while keeping current set-ups intact • Be creative in a manner for compact storage • Provide easy to read instructions on how to assemble and use in a safe manner • Is low cost (Budget <800) • Can be set up by 2 people • Can be set up and taken down quickly • Long lifespan

  12. Engineering requirements • Measure fluid speed range • Record Time • Measure forces at base/tie downs • Storage volume • Set up time of test rig • Required technicians to set up • Safely contain all flying debris that may occur • Cost of entire system • Cost of most expensive component • Lifespan • Percent of students that can safely assemble the test rig

  13. House of quality Most Important Requirements • Safely contain all flying debris that may occur (18.8%) • Measure forces at base/tie downs(12.8%) • Record fluid speed range (12.2%) • Record time (11.7%)
