What is Prayer?
If the Bible is God’s Predominant way of talking to us
Prayer is the Predominant way we talk to God
Deuteronomy . 4:7
What other nation is so great
as to have their gods near them
the way the LORD our God
is near us whenever we pray to him?
Come near to God
and he will come near to
A little different from our prayers
And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, (N.I.V.)
And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.(K.J.V.)
When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven:
"You are my Son, whom I love;
with you I am well pleased."
"Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!"
Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."
What was it about what Jesus was doing
that captured this disciples’ interest?
we know that Jesus often spent all night in Prayer
One of those days Jesus went
out to a mountainside to
pray, and spent the night
praying to God.
Or the time of day that Jesus would pray?
writes that Jesus would pray very early in the morning
Mk.6:46 writes that he prayed leading into the evening
Was it the posture that Jesus took?
We know from Luke 22:45 that
Jesus rose from praying
Luke 22 :41
He withdrew about a stone’s
throw beyond them,
knelt down and prayed,
Was it that the disciples were wondering
what Jesus would be doing on his own
For we know that Jesus would often
withdraw himself from them go away on
his own to pray
But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?“
He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
The Lord’s Prayer
……..There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place."
Then say to Pharaoh,
‘This is what the LORD
Israel is my firstborn son,
But you are our Father, though Abraham does not know
us or Israel acknowledge us; you, O LORD, are our
Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.
Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.
Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you
Psalm 115 1-3
1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.
2 Why do the nations say, "Where is their God?"
3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.
2 Chronicles 20:6
"O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no-one can withstand you…………
For this is what the high and lofty One says—
he who lives for ever, whose name is holy:
"I live in a high and holy place,
but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.
…….Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant also from wilful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.
The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
If his children ask for fish he will not give then a snake
If his children ask for an egg he will not give then a scorpion
If his children ask for bread he will not give them a stone
It is important to
align yourself to the will of God Rom.12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.
2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
We will not get if we ask with wrong motives Jas.4:3
Ultimately Prayer is about trusting, relying and depending on God in the knowledge that through faith and belief in a loving God, God’s will will be done.
When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated, apostles.
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples."
"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you
as wheat. But I have prayed for you,
Simon, that your faith may not fail. And
when you have turned back, strengthen
The Raising of Lazarus
So they took away the stone.
Then Jesus looked up and said,
"Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
"Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."
After Jesus said this, he looked
towards heaven and prayed:
"Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place
called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit
here while I go over there and pray."He took
Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with
him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
Jesus said, "Father, forgive them,
for they do not know what they
are doing." And they divided up
his clothes by casting lots.
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud
voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" —which
means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?"Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into
your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said
this, he breathed his last.
