  3. Results • British economy decimated • National Debt: 1754 - £75 million 1763 - £133 million • Want colonies to contribute to repayment effort • Establish taxes: • Currency Act • Sugar Act • Stamp Act

  4. Quartering Act (1765) • Colonies forced to feed and house British troops • Response to inadequate care of British troops • Colonies upset • New York refused to comply • Colonial governor and legislature suspended from office (New York conforms to the demand) • Act allowed to expire in 1767

  5. Currency Act (1764) • Update of 1751 Act • Stopped colonies from issuing paper money • Forced colonies to use specie • Gold • Silver

  6. Sugar Act (1764) • 3 cent tax on Sugar (Decrease in tax) • Increased enforcement of tax • Increased taxes on coffee, wine, indigo • Colonists angered • Not represented in Parliament • No say over legislation

  7. Stamp Act (1765) • Required colonists to pay a tax on all paper used • Revenue-raising Act • First direct tax

  8. Colonial Reaction • “No Taxation Without Representation” • Stamp Act Congress • Protest Stamp Act • Colonial Resistance Organizations form • Sons of Liberty • Act repealed in 1766

  9. Townshend Act (1767) • Aka: Townshend Duties • Indirect taxes to defray colonial expenses/raise revenue • Items taxed: • Glass • Tea • Lead • Oil • Paper

  10. Colonial Reaction • British customs officials mobbed (Boston) • Colonies agree to non-importation agreement • Won’t import British goods • Result: British trade heavily disrupted • British repeal all acts in 1770 • Except tax on Tea!

So What? • How did the taxes imposed by the British help create the American identity? • Ideas created: • Representative government • “No taxation without representation” • Republican Resistance • Stamp Act Congress • Identity independence from Britain • No longer simply “British subjects” • Colonial identity created
