What is Cancer ? • Cancer is a disease caused by normal cells changing so that they grow in an uncontrolled way. The uncontrolled growth causes a lump called a tumor. If not treated, the tumor can cause problems in one or more of the following ways -Spreading into normal tissues nearby -Causing pressure on other body structures -Spreading to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or bloodstream • There are over 200 different types of cancer because there are over 200 different types of body cells. For example, cells that make up the lungs can cause a lung cancer.
Benign and Malignant Cancer Tumors (lumps) can be benign or malignant. Benign means it is not cancer. Benign tumors • Usually grow quite slowly • Do not spread to other parts of the body • Usually have a covering made up of normal cells Benign tumors are made up of cells that are quite similar to normal cells. They will only cause a problem if they • Grow very large • Become uncomfortable or unsightly • Press on other body organs • Take up space inside the skull (such as a brain tumor) • Release hormones that affect how the body works Malignant tumors are made up of cancer cells. • They Usually grow faster than benign tumors • Spread into and destroy surrounding tissues • Spread to other parts of the body
Primary and Secondary Cancer The place where a cancer begins is called the primary cancer. Cancers may also spread into nearby body tissues and it is called locally advanced cancer. For example, lung cancer can spread to the lining of the chest (the pleura). There they can start to grow into new tumors. Tumors from cancers that have spread are called secondary cancers or metastases
Diagnostic Tests for Cancer Patients The most common diagnostic tests are described below Biopsy A biopsy is the removal of a small amount of tissue for examination under a microscope. Fine needle aspiration biopsy. This test uses a thin, hollow needle attached to a syringe to collect a small amount of fluid and cells from the suspicious area. Positron emission tomography (PET) scan. A PET scan is a way to create pictures of organs and tissues inside the body. MRI An MRI uses magnetic fields, not x-rays, to produce detailed images of the body. Ultrasound An ultrasound uses sound waves to create a picture of the internal organs.
Signs and Symptoms of cancer Unexplained weight loss When you lose weight for no known reason, it’s called an unexplained weight loss. An unexplained weight loss of 10 pounds or more may be the first sign of cancer. Fever Fever is very common with cancer, but it more often happens after cancer has spread from where it started. Fatigue Fatigue is extreme tiredness that does not get better with rest. It may be an important symptom as cancer grows. Pain Pain may be an early symptom with some cancers like bone cancers or testicular cancer.
Signs and Symptoms of cancer Skin changes Along with cancers of the skin, some other cancers can cause skin changes that can be seen. These signs and symptoms include: Darker looking skin (hyper pigmentation) Yellowish skin and eyes (jaundice) Reddened skin (erythema) Itching (pruritis) Excessive hair growth Change in bowel habits or bladder function Long-term constipation, diarrhea, or a change in the size of the stool may be a sign of colon cancer Sores that do not heal Skin Cancer may bleed and look like sores that don’t heal. A long-lasting sore in the mouth could be an oral cancer. Bleeding from the vagina after the menopause or between periods Bleeding between periods, or ‘spotting’ as it is sometimes known, is a fairly common side effect of the contraceptive pill.
Signs and Symptoms of cancer White patches inside the mouth or white spots on the tongue White patches inside the mouth and white spots on the tongue may be leukoplakia. Leukoplakia is a pre-cancerous area. Unusual bleeding or discharge Unusual bleeding can happen in early or advanced cancer. Coughing up blood in the sputum (phlegm) may be a sign of lung cancer. Thickening or lump in the breast or other parts of the body Many cancers can be felt through the skin. These cancers occur mostly in the breast, testicle, lymph nodes (glands), and the soft tissues of the body. Recent change in a wart or mole or any new skin change Any wart, mole, or freckle that changes color, size, or shape, or that loses its sharp border should be seen by a doctor right away. Nagging cough or hoarseness A cough that does not go away may be a sign of lung cancer. Hoarseness can be a sign of cancer of the voice box or thyroid gland.
The Seven Warning Signs of Cancer The American Cancer Society uses the word C-A-U-T-I-O-N to help recognize the seven early signs of cancer: Change in bowel or bladder habits A sore that does not heal Unusual bleeding or discharge Thickening or lump in the breast, testicles, or elsewhere Indigestion or difficulty swallowing Obvious change in the size, color, shape, or thickness of a wart, mole, or mouth sore Nagging cough or hoarseness

Side effect of other modern therapies like Chemotherpy, Radiotherapy and Surigcal therapy Nausea Chemotherapy is the treatment that most commonly causes nausea and vomiting. In most cases, patients will be given anti-nausea drugs. Fatigue Fatigue is a serious problem for at least 70 percent of cancer patients. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can bring it on, and so can the anemia that often comes with treatment. Hearing loss Progressive, irreversible hearing loss can result from radiation therapy and platinum-based chemotherapy drugs. The drugs damage the hair cells of the inner ear, making the ear less responsive to sound waves.
