  4. Texas Independence movement. • Stephen Austin advises loyalty to Mexico. • Goes to Mexico City to petition the government. • Santa Anna cancels Constitution of 1824 • Promises death to anyone who challenges his authority. 4

  5. Battle of the Alamo Feb.23, to March 6, 1836 • Col.. Travis commands 187 men. Including Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett • San Ana has an army of 6000 men. Modern artillery. • “Surrender or die” -- Santa Anna

  6. “Victory or Death”, Travis responded. • The line in the sand • Siege lasts 11 days. • 187 Texans die, costs Santa Ana 1544 dead. • Buys Houston time to prepare. • “Remember the Alamo!” the rally cry.
