  2. FOLKTALE Panchatantra: The Hunter and the Pigeons A long time ago, there was a huge Banyan tree which was home to the nests of many birds. One day, a hunter happened to come to the tree. Seeing that many birds lived there, he set up his net below the tree and scattered a few grains of rice to attract them. A fock of pigeons fying past the Banyan tree saw the grains of rice and went down to eat them. Suddenly, a huge net fell over them and trapped them. They struggled to get out of it but couldn’t. They could see the hunter walking towards them looking delighted at having caught so many pigeons. The pigeons were distressed and thought the end was near. But the wise king of the pigeons had a plan and said, “We should all fy up carrying the net with us. Once we manage to get away from the hunter, we can think of what to do next.” The pigeons listened to their king’s advice. Each pigeon held a part of the huge net in his beak and all of them few up together. The hunter was amazed to see this happening. He tried to catch them, but they were too fast. The king of the pigeons knew a mouse that lived not far from them and could help them escape the net. Hearing his friend’s voice, the mouse came out of his hole. He saw the pigeons and their king trapped in the net and said, “Oh! Who did this? I will set you free right away.” He began to nibble the net nearest to the king, but the king stopped him and said, “Set my subjects free frst. No king can see his subjects in pain and be free himself.” The mouse nibbled of the net easily with his sharp teeth and after freeing all the pigeons, he freed the king pigeon at last. The pigeons were very grateful to the mouse. They thanked the mouse and few away, proving that unity is strength.

  4. Sam Visits The Wave Discover A New Place I’m in Arizona, Utah and the beautiful landscape you see around me is called “The Wave”. Up until a few decades ago, very few people knew of this beautiful formation. Today however, it is a well-known favorite of photographers and hikers alike. Known for its undulating forms in a myriad of colours, the wave is nothing short of a phenome- non. And like all things phenomenal, it isn’t easy to get here. There’s actually a lottery system that dispenses permits on a daily basis, and on any given day, only 10 of those are given out. Or, you could plan the trip at least 4 months in advance and book permits online. This is done keeping in mind the fragile nature of the formation and is a measure of preservation. Only 20 people are allowed to visit “The Wave” each day! To reach this surreal formation, you can take any one of four trails – The White House trailhead, the Buckskin Gulch, the Wire Pass trail and the Lee’s Ferry trailhead. Each of these is scenically beautiful, although, the White House trailhead, being the main entrance, is the most commonly used. None of the trails are marked, again, in an attempt to preserve the natural integrity of this beautiful place. The great Sandstone Wave dates back to the Jurassic era! The hike itself is fairly difcult but defnitely worth it. On obtaining a permit, the Visitor Centre also provides hikers with a map of the place and information to make the hike easier. You can also opt for a hike guide if you wish and they’ll give you awesome tidbits of knowledge about the wave, such as the fact that this great sandstone wave dates back to the Jurassic era, i.e. 160 -180 million years ago. And that it was formed due to erosion and compression of the Navajo sandstone. Actual dinosaur footprints have also been found here in this region. Although the place is beautiful year round, spring and autumn are the most popular times to visit. Name the Woodland Birds

  6. You Coley & should return borrowed things! Bumbley About health and more! Return Things You Have Borrowed Why is it important to return things that you have borrowed? A lot of us have favourite things, objects or books or clothes or toys we have collected or found or saved for special occassions. Some times it’s a present from someone we love a lot, or sometimes a favourite relative thought of you and brought it from some place they trav- elled to. Which means they thought you were special. What happens when someone borrows it and doesn’t give it back, or damages it or breaks it? You get upset. The same way, your friend may also get upset, if you don’t return their things. Your friend must like you a lot, if they have shared something with you. You must always remember to return it. It shows you like the friend or relative and you value them in your lives. It is called good manners or good social etiquettes Q: What do you get if you cross a parrot with a pigeon?  A:Voice mail. Q: What did the rich pigeon call the poor pigeon? A:A pheasant. Tickle your funny bone watch the news? A:To get the feather forecast. Q: Why do pigeons

  7. Pondering Corner Why Does Your Eye Twitch? Those annoying little muscle twitches you get in your eye are a type of involuntary reaction of the body in response to fatigue or stress. Your eyes are telling you that they are stressed by watching too much television or spending too much time on the computer, or playing too many video games. Other reasons for twitch- ing of eyes include pollution, defciency of minerals like magnesium, defciency of vita- mins, or some kind of eye allergy. Sometimes, lack of sleep also causes your eyes to twitch. So give your eyes some rest and all will be fne. Did you know that there are lot of superstitions when it comes to eye twitches? In some cultures a twitching of eyes is believed to be indicative of good or bad luck! AMUSING NEWS A Very Fashionable Lost Pigeon Animal rescuers were concerned upon fnding a lost pigeon. How did they know he was a pet? Per- haps it was the custom made bedazzled vest the pigeon was wearing that gave it away. The pigeon was later reunited with his owners who had frantically been searching for him.

  8. a comic story sir dig-a-lot Pax Romana “When we talk about the Romans or Greeks, we talk about war and kings. Was there a time when there was peace and no war?” Rohan asked Sir Dig-a-Lot on a Sunday night. “Certainly! Let me tell you about Pax Romana. Pax Romana is derived from Latin and it means ‘Roman Peace.’ It started in 27 B.C and lasted till 180 A.D, that is about 206 years. It was established by Julius Caesar’s son, Augustus. 7

  9. Before Augustus Caesar’s reign, Rome had a civil war. Under the reign of Augustus, peace prevailed because of the order in the country. Over 6,000 soldiers were stationed at the places most likely to rise in conflict. This period of peace brought on a period of growth in the arts, science and technology.” “What happened after the peace period ended and how did it end?” asked Rohan. 8

  10. Sir Dig-a-Lot answered, “Well, instead of continuing to focus on protecting their borders Romans started fighting one another again. By this time, many powerful kings in the neighbourhood existed. They took advantage of the internal conflict in Rome. They invaded Rome and caused great destruction. By 400 AD Rome was completely destroyed and overrun by outsiders such as Germans, Visigoths, Slavs, Huns, Persians, etc. Many historians believe that 476 AD was the official date of the fall of the Roman Empire.” “I think 206 years of peace is an achievement worth talking about. Thanks for telling me this story,” Rohan told Sir Dig-a-Lot. 9

  11. “No problem Rohan. Now sleep tight!” Sir Dig-A-Lot bid Rohan goodbye with the promise of another story another night. stories in rhyme The Fox and the Stork Old Father Fox, who was known to be mean, Invited Dame Stork in to dinner. There was nothing but soup that could scarcely be seen: Soup never was served any thinner. And the worst of it was, as I’m bound to relate, Father Fox dished it up on a fat china plate. Dame Stork, as you know, has a very long beak: Not a crumb or drop could she gather Had she pecked at the plate every day in the week. But as for the Fox–sly old Father: With his tongue lapping soup at a scandalous rate, He licked up the last bit and polished the plate. Pretty soon Mistress Stork spread a feast of her own; Father Fox was invited to share it. He came, and he saw, and he gave a great groan: The stork had known how to prepare it. She had meant to get even, and now was her turn: Father Fox was invited to eat from an urn. The urn’s mouth was small, and it had a long neck; The food in it smelled most delightful. Dame Stork, with her beak in, proceeded to peck; But the Fox found that fasting is frightful. Home he sneaked. On his way there he felt his ears burn When he thought of the Stork and her tall, tricky urn.

  12. There was a tall mango tree in our back garden. Every year, a new fock of pigeons would come and build their nests in that tree. My family always felt like generations of pigeons had grown up in our mango tree. My brother and I would play in the garden each evening, after returning from our after-school classes. One evening, we heard a little rustling in the bushes below the mango tree. Upon closer inspection, we realized it was a small pigeon chick! Complete the Story... fun facts with Hamlet the Hamster To know or not to know, that is the question! Well, wouldn’t you prefer to know? Amazing Animal Senses Ants have a ‘super-sense’ of smell, which directs them to food from several metres away. A starfish uses its arms to see. There are small spots located at the ends of the starfish’s arms that help it to know the difference between light and dark. Snakes use their tongues to smell. At night, they use their special infrared sensory organs to locate and hunt their warm-blooded prey. Butterflies use their feet to taste the nectar of the flowers. Pigeons have something like an in-built compass which allows them to find their way using the knowledge of the Earth’s magnetic field and the position of the sun. That is why they were used to carry messages.
