Understanding Representation in "The O.C.": First Impressions and Character Stereotypes

This analysis explores the portrayal of characters in "The O.C." through the lens of first impressions and stereotypes. We examine how clothing choices, body language, and settings contribute to audience perceptions of characters. The significance of mise-en-scène, costume, and editing techniques is discussed, revealing how the show uses visual storytelling to quickly convey character archetypes. Furthermore, we consider the implications of these character representations, including gender balance and societal stereotypes, and how they shape our understanding of identity.

  1. The O.C. Representation of Characters

  2. First Impressions • How important are first impressions? • What can your clothes say about you? • Do you make assumptions about people based on the way they look?

  3. Your Own Personal Style? • Do you care about what other people think of your appearance • Do you wear Fred Perry, Rockport boots or a Berghaus coat when you normally go out? • Do you wear baggy clothes? • Are labels/brands important to you when you are shopping? • Would you say you are fairly sporty? • Which bands style of music do you prefer? • What do you spend most of your free time doing?

  4. Representation • Representation is how characters are conveyed to the audience. • It has to be done quickly – can rely on stereotypes • Uses character ‘types’ or archetypes

  7. What about this woman? • What is her occupation? • What type of car does she drive? • What are her hobbies? • What type of music might she listen to?

  9. Representation in “The O.C.” • The producers use this stereotyping shorthand to establish the characters • They also use a variety of techniques to ensure that the audience knows these characters (or their type) quickly

Mise-en-scène is the placing into the setting on all the elements to be filmed; props, lighting, character behaviour, make-up, sets and anything else that is in the frame of the camera lens at the time of filming. For example, an adaptation of a Charles Dickens novel would include period costume, Victorian buildings, gas lamps, the clopping of horses hooves and so on.
