  3. Review • Satan tried to keep God from fulfilling his promise to Abraham • Israel was enslaved • Egyptians attempted to kill all the baby boys • God raised up a leader - Moses • God convinced Israel that He was going to deliver them from slavery using Moses and Aaron (Moses’ brother)

Pharaoh Refuses to Obey God • Exodus 5:1-2 • Afterward, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.’” • Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”

Pharaoh Refuses to Obey God • Pondering question: • Why didn’t Moses just say, “Pharaoh, you need to let the Israelites go or some bad things are going to happen to you and all Egypt?” • Moses is representing the Lord God to Pharaoh! • Pharaoh is given the opportunity to accept or reject God’s Word. • Pharaoh rejects God...not Moses and Aaron.

  6. Pharaoh Refuses to Obey God • Egyptians did not worship or recognize God • They worshiped the Nile River • They worshiped the sun, moon, and animals • They had many gods • Pharaoh himself was worshiped as a god

  7. Pharaoh Refuses to Obey God • God knew Pharaoh’s heart was evil and that Pharaoh would resist God (Exodus 3:19) • God had a plan to use Pharaoh’s stubborn heart...Read Exodus 6:1-8 • “...Then... [the Israelites] will know that I am the Lord your God...” • From Exodus 7:5, “...the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord...”

God Sends Plagues on Egypt • Exodus 7:14-10:29 describes nine plagues that God brought on Egypt • Each plague represents God’s power over one or more Egyptian gods. • All water in Egypt turns to blood • Plagues of Frogs, lice (gnats), and flies • Horses, cattle, sheep, camels, goats and donkeys become sick • Killer hailstorm, plague of locusts, and thick darkness affected all places where Egyptians lived.

God Sends Plagues on Egypt • The land of Goshen did not experience any of these plagues...Hmm... • Why did God protect the Israelites? • His love, mercy, grace, and promise to Abraham! • They were God’s chosen people • To prove to the Egyptians his power and might and His choice of the Israelites to be his people

God Sends Plagues on Egypt • Plague Pattern... • God sends a plague, Pharaoh calls for Moses to ask God to remove the plague • Pharaoh promises to let Israel go, then God removes the plague • After the plague is removed, Pharaoh hardens his heart and does not let the Israelites leave • Each time, Pharaoh becomes more proud and hard-hearted

  11. God’s Final Judgment on Egypt • Read Exodus 11:1, 4-7 • Now the LORD had said to Moses, "I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely. • So Moses said [to Pharaoh], "This is what the LORD says: 'About midnight I will go throughout Egypt.

God’s Final Judgment on Egypt • Read Exodus 11:1, 4-7 • Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the slave girl, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. • There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any man or animal.' Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.

God’s Final Judgment on Egypt • God knew Pharaoh’s heart and just what would be necessary to convince Pharaoh to let Israel go. • God was in total control of the situation, but did not overrule Pharaoh’s freedom of choice! • Israelites were sinners and deserved to die for their sins, but God demonstrated his grace and mercy towards them!

  16. God’s Final Judgment on Egypt Exodus 12:1-3, 5 • God’s Directions... • Choose a year-old lamb without defect The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.

  17. God’s Final Judgment on Egypt Exodus 12:6, 22 • God’s Directions... • Choose a year-old lamb without defect • Kill the lamb and catch its blood Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.

No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.
