  2. Expository Essay • Introduction • Body Paragraph 1 • Body Paragraph 2 • Conclusion Indent There needs to be four clearly indented paragraphs in your essay. If you forget to include the indent, then you need to indicate it with an arrow. The indent provides clarity and organization to your essay.

  3. Introduction • Brief introduction to the essay topic with background information • Thesis Statement • Main idea of paper + transition word + 2 topics/reasons of paper. • Example: • You may either write a clear one thesis sentence introduction or write a short introduction paragraph that ends with the clear thesis as the last sentence. Prompt: Write an essay explaining how emotions affect judgments. Emotions can affect an individual’s judgments by blinding the person’s sense of reason; in contrast, emotions can also drive an individual’s passions.

  4. What will be the topic sentences of each body paragraph?? Thesis Statement = Roadmap • Prompt: Write an essay explaining how emotions affect judgments. Emotions can affect an individual’s judgments by blinding the person’s sense of reason; in contrast, emotions can also drive an individual’s passions. ¶ #1 Topic Sentence When an individual’s sense of logic is blinded, he or she will be tempted to act rashly. ¶ #2 Topic Sentence Nevertheless, emotions might have positive influence on a person’s decision-making as emotions can help an individual achieve a goal. Topic sentences are like mini-thesis statements for each body paragraph!! They go at the beginning of each idea.

  5. Body Paragraphs 1 and 2 • Topic Sentence • A sentence that reveals the main idea of the one paragraph. You need a new topic sentence when you start a second body paragraph. • Example • Historical • Literary • Personal • Analysis • The “so what” portion of the essay. Why did you choose that example? How does it prove your point? What is its importance? • Connect back to the prompt and your thesis.

  6. Emotions might also have a positive influence on a person’s decision-making as emotions can help an individual achieve a goal. In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus is consumed by the love he has for his wife and son. The passion he feels for his family aids him in resisting the temptation of the sea-nymph, Calypso. Emotions drive this hero’s 20 year journey to get back to Ithaca, helping him finally achieve his goal at the end of the epic.Emotions can give a person the motivation they need to keep pressing forward, even when situations get hard.Without the emotional drive to succeed, mankind is left lacking a sense of urgency. Lackadaisical attitudes such as these can greatly hinder the achievements of a society. It’s only when people use their passions for a purpose that true change can take place.

  7. Conclusion • Connect back to the idea of your thesis. • Cannot just rewrite your exact same thesis sentence from the introduction. • If you have the space, don’t just write one sentence!
