Carolina -starts as a proprietary colony/province run by 8 Lord Proprietors that were in charge of certain sections -The northern part of the Carolina colony became officially known as NC when the Lord Proprietors split the colony and appointed a separate governor for each part -The Great Wagon Road opened up NC’s backcountry or Piedmont for settlers, such as: ~Moravian pacifists ~Quakers ~British, Dutch, German
Carolina Cont… -Northern NC was the Granville District because Lord Granville refused to sell his rights to George II -NC immigrant groups focus on faming farming and self-sufficiency as well as political and religious independence John Lawson -wrote detailed notes about NC people, places, and plants, and animals and helped establish the town of Bath
Blackbeard -aka Edward Teach/Thatch -an infamous English pirate that was around colonial America and the West Indies -he would light fuses or twist hemp into his hair to light and scare off his enemies -he agrees to take a royal pardon, quite piracy, and settles the town of Bath ~This doesn’t last long and he returns to piracy reeking havoc on the rule and order of the colonies - But are pirate really so bad…
Piratevs.Privateer -Piracy is an illegal act of attacking and robbing, in this case ships at sea -Pirates are nothing new, but the act of piracy was once allowed by England and they were called Privateers ~Privateers robbed and took over ships from English competitors, such as the French & Spanish. ~They only became Pirates as they began to attack English ships
Rebellion -Culpeper’s Rebellion ~Colonists opposing the Navigation Acts which taxed the colonist and gave the British a monopoly on the products from the colonist ~couldn’t trade with other countries -Cary’s Rebellion ~colonist protested the gov. trying to keep Quakers out of the gov. and make the colonists pay for the Anglican Church
Tuscarora -In 1653, the Tuscarora’s (Native people in NC) greeted the Europeans with ~a show of strength combined with hospitality -The Lord Proprietor’s goals for the colonies included” ~making the colonists more independent and strengthening England -This came at a cost of taking land and in this case from the Tuscarora starting the Tuscarora war ~the English settlers win the war and start some of the first settlements in NC
