  2. AIMS OF PRESENTATION • To provide an overview on: • Background information, • Legal Condition, • Topics which will be used in the 2017 Census.

  3. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Administrative Division Of The Country • Ethiopia has nine National States and Two City Administration , • National States are divided into 96 zones and almost 1,200 districts.

  4. Cont’d… BRIEF HISTORY OF CENSUS IN ETHIOPIA • Ethiopia has so far conducted three National Population and Housing Censuses: • The First Population and Housing Census was conducted in May 1984. • The Population count at that time was 39.9 million.

  5. Cont’d… • The Second Population and Housing Census in October 1994 • The Population count at that time was 53.5 million

  6. Cont’d… • The Third population and Housing Census was conducted in May 2007 under the supervision of National Population and Housing Census Commission. • This time the population became 73.8million.

  7. Cont’d… • The data entry work for the first and second census took very long time. • Therefore, the reports production took us longer time.

Cont’d… • In the third census we used the scanning technology for data entry, therefore it was possible to provide the report in a reasonably short time. • This time for the fourth census we plan to use tables for data collection for the majority of the country and paper for some of the places .

  9. Cont’d… • We used tables in the two pilot censuses conducted in November 2016 and March 2017. • The two pilot censuses were done successfully using tables.

  10. Legal condition • The National Population and Housing Census Commission was established. • The Regional Census Commissions are also established in 9 regions and in two city Administrations.

  11. Cont’d… • The Zone and district Census Commissions are going to be established in the coming few months. • The smallest administrative division in Ethiopia is called “kebele” at this level we will have census committee.

  14. Topics (Cont’d…) • 5.Marital status and Age at first marriage, • 6.Education (Literacy status, school attainment and highest grade completed), • 7. ICT use, • 8.Economic Characteristics,

  15. Topics (cont’d) • 9.Fetility (Children ever born and birth in the last months), • 10.Mortaliy(household death in the last months), • 11.Housing characteristics, • 12.Emigration (about Ethiopian who live abroad).

  16. Topics(cont’d…) • New topics used in the 2017 census are ICT use. • and Emigration (about Ethiopians currently living abroad).

  18. Topics (cont’d) • We changed the classification and responses categories which was used in the last three censuses in disability. • This time we took the classifications and responses categories prepared by the Washington group.
