  1. What do H-2A Workers Need from MEPs? How to Engage and Motivate H-2A Students Hope Derry, OSY Facilitator, Bladen County Schools Hunter Ogletree, MEP Coordinator, Henderson County Schools Rachel Wright Junio, NCMEP Administrator

  2. OBJECTIVES • Understand challenges presented by working with H-2A students • Learn how other MEPs have utilized strategies in addressing these challenges • Apply this knowledge to each practitioner’s personal context within their MEP

  3. Agenda • Introductions • Challenges • How Can We Address the Challenges? • Success Stories • Breakout Groups

  4. What are the Challenges? What do you see as the biggest challenges to working with H-2A OSY? https://PollEv.com/free_text_polls/ylC14w8rEDXOU1A/web

  5. Challenges • Time • Availability • Motivation • Camp Access • Lack of Transportation • Isolation (of housing and of OSY)

  6. Keys to Addressing the Challenges • Best practices for addressing issues of time and availability: • Be flexible with your schedule as a practitioner. • Work with your administrators to work out 1-2 days per week where you can work in the evenings. • Look at the weather- if it rains, they won’t be working.

  7. Keys to Addressing the Challenges • Best practices for addressing motivation: • Show you’re committed to showing up. • Conduct the needs assessment and give positive feedback based on the information they give you.

  8. Keys to Addressing the Challenges • Best practices for addressing camp access issues: • Work with your state legal services agency that works with farmworkers. • Build relationships with growers and crewleaders.

  9. Keys to Addressing the Challenges • Best practices for addressing lack of transportation: • Go to them! • Don’t expect them to be able to come to a centralized location.

  10. Keys to Addressing the Challenges • Best practices for addressing isolation of H-2A OSY who qualify (only a couple OSY per camp)- Camps are very spread out etc.: • Use technology-delivered lessons to offer more frequent services.

  11. Success Stories • Interactive Lessons • OSY Field Trips • OSY Mentors • Goal Setting

  12. Breakout Groups • On your way in you were handed a color card. • Break into groups based on your card’s color. • In what ways would these strategies work in your state? • In what ways might you alter them? • What other ideas do you have to address the major challenges?
