  2. Origins of GMDC Everything started in the American Dance Festival of 1984 when it initiated its first International Choreographers Residency Program. Yang Meiqi participated for the first time in 1986 and got inspired. Charles L. Reinhart (Director of the ADF) helped her to establish modern dance in China.

  3. Facts of GMDC • In 1987, with help of the Asian Cultural Council, the ADF began its first Institutional Linkage Program at the Guangdong Dance Academy. • Recognized American Choreographers went to the Guangdong Dance Academy to teach modern dance.

  4. Facts of GMDC • In 1990, the first graduates from the 3-year modern dance company received their certificates. • Finally in 1992 the Guangdong Modern Dance Company was founded as the “Guangdong Experimental Modern Dance Company”

Director of GMDC • LIU QiDirector of Guangdong Modern Dance Company, Certified as the state first level choreographer of China • In 1991, she graduated with Bachelor’s Degree of Arts from Beijing Dance Academy • LIU Qi joined the Guangdong Modern Dance Company in 1996 and served as dancer, teacher and head of the Arts Department • In 2006, LIU Qi was rewarded with Century Star of Guangdong Province for her outstanding achievements in arts

Importance of GMDC • With a forward-looking, diversified, open and inclusive vision, GMDC has been invited to numerous remarkable international festivals in dozens of countries and regions • Its works have won critical acclaim and overwhelming responses from audiences and critics around the world.
