  2. Pre lab • Reference solution – a solution of know composition used as a comparison –[one know to contain the sought ion • Control- controls are groups where no phenomenon is expected

  3. PRE LAB • Confirming test – positive test confirms the presence of the ion[due to change in color or formation of precipitate ] • Precipitate – change in color of appearance of sample due to formation of an insoluble substance • negative test –no change in appearance [no color or precipitate] means ion is not present or present in very low amounts

  4. Materials • Micro plate , pipettes, tooth picks , distilled water, tap water , dead sea water, reference solutions • Testing solutions –KSCN,AgNO3, Barium chloride

  5. precaution • Follow all lab safety rules • Protect eyes and skin wear goggles and aprons • Do not taste or smell any chemicals , do not touch chemicals with bear hands • If any chemical falls on your skin wash with cold water tell the teacher • Some chemicals are toxic and others stain skin handle with care • Wash hands at the end of the lab

  6. Precaution • Label a white sheet of paper as show in the data table • Label pipettes with a permanent marker • Do the touch the pipette with samples when dispensing liquids • Do not touch the tip of the pipettes • Stir each well with a separate tooth pick • Clean up – toothpicks in garbage , wash plate as instructed , pipettes in garbage
