Appalachian Rural Development Philanthropy Initiative “We envision a future where enduring philanthropic and charitable resources will provide for the changing needs of Appalachian communities for generations to come, where everyone can participate in giving to their communities, and where all will benefit from LOCAL generosity.”

ARDPI Overview • Appalachian Regional Commission • Established 1964 • Presently: four goals identified in the Commission‘s plan:1) Increase  job opportunities and per capita income in Appalachia to reach parity with the nation; 2) Strengthen the capacity of the people of Appalachia to compete in the global economy; 3) Develop and improve Appalachia's infrastructure to make the Region economically competitive; and 4) Build the Appalachian Development Highway System to reduce Appalachia's isolation • Initiated the ARDPI in 2011 with a commitment of $1,200,00 for distressed counties in Eastern Kentucky • Joint effort of DC/KY offices • Initially designed to work with communities to establish local philanthropic leadership and resources via a network of local partners in order to develop long-term funding for community development
