  1. WELCOME TO THE JACKSON STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES

  2. 1 John 1:6-2:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us…. 1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

  3. HINDRANCES TO FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD

  4. FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD • GOD IS LIGHT (1:5), • GOD IS LOVE (4:8), • GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE (5:20) • FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD CAN BE ENJOYED AND MAINTAINED BUT IT CAN ALSO BE HINDERED • IN I JOHN 1:6 - 2:6 WE ARE TOLD THE THINGS WHICH CAN HINDERFELLOWSHIP WITH GOD

  5. I. HYPOCRISY- 1 John 1:6-7 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

  6. I. HYPOCRISY • PROFESSION WITHOUT PRACTICE • Mat 23 - WOE TO SCRIBES & PHARISEES • 1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, 2 saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. 3 "Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.4 "For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 "But all their works they do to be seen by men.

  7. I. HYPOCRISY • 13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up thekingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. • 14 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows'houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. • 15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 'For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

  8. I. HYPOCRISY • 23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 "Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! • 25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. 26 "Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.

  9. I. HYPOCRISY • 27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. 28 "Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. • 29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adom the monuments of the righteous, 30 "and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.' 31 "Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.

  10. II. IMPENITENCE-1 John 1:8-9 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins.He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  11. II. IMPENITENCE A. Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, B. James 5:16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

  12. III. SELF-SUFFICIENCY -1 John 1:10 - 2:2 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

  13. III. SELF-SUFFICIENCY A. HUMANISTS SAY MAN DOES NOT NEED GOD B. 2 Cor 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

  14. IV. INDIFFERENCE -1 John 2:3-6 Now bv this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

  15. IV. INDIFFERENCE A. John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. B. 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

  16. HINDRANCES TO FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD • The hypocrite is a liar and does not the truth when he claims fellowship with god • The impenitent deceives himself and the truth is not in him when he says he has no sins • The self-sufficient makes god a liar when he claims his innocence and lack of need for a savior • The indifferent man is a liar when he claims to know god but does not obey his word
