Sourav Ganguly Confirms India To Tour Sri Lanka In July BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has shared that the Indian team will be touring to Sri Lanka in July for a limited-overs series. However, the tour will be without the top players such as skipper Virat Kohli and deputy Rohit Sharma as they will be playing a five-match Test series in England. During an interaction with PTI, Sourav Ganguly said, “We have planned a white ball series for the senior men’s team during the month of July where they will play T20 Internationals and ODIs in Sri Lanka. Yes, it will be a team of white-ball specialists. It will be a different team.” Image source by twitter There will be at least 5 T20Is and a probable three ODIs in Sri Lanka as well. On the other hand, India’s tour of England will be concluding on September 14 and with the schedule of the rest of IPL yet to be planned, the BCCI would want the players like Shikhar Dhawan, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Yuzvendra Chahal to be match ready as well. A BCCI source was quoted as saying to PTI, “The BCCI president is very keen that all our top players are match ready and since England doesn’t have a white ball leg the month of July can be utilized well.” On the other hand, for the Kohli led team, they need not return from the UK, which has some hard quarantine rules in place amid the crunch time of COVID-19 as well.
While talking about that, the source added, “Technically, in the month of July, there are no official senior India team matches. The Test squad will be playing intrasquad games. So there is no harm in India’s white-ball experts getting some match time and selectors also get to fix the missing jigsaws in selection puzzle.” Image source by twitter However, the tour will give the team a chance to test the bench strength with the players like Yuzvendra Chahal, Rahul Chahar, or even Rahul Tewatia or any new one like Chetan Sakariya or Devdutt Padikkal. While Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are likely to be seen in the squad, experienced Shreyas Iyer hopes to get fit to play in the series as well.
