  5. Meetings 5 IDA - Research & Development Committee - Status Report

  6. Part of the R&D committee team has visited the following organizations in Doha-Qatar during the period from 07-10/10/2012: Committee’s visit to Doha, Qatar October 7 – 10, 2012 6 IDA - Research & Development Committee - Status Report

  7. ConocoPhillips Global Water Sustainability Center (GWSC) • ConocoPhillips is a major oil and gas company with headquarters in Houston, Texas. ConocoPhillips, the major oil and Gas Company, established the GWSC at Qatar Science & Technology Park with the aim to develop innovative and cost-effective treatment technologies for the treatment of petroleum by-product water, as well as other projects relating to industrial and municipal water sustainability. The GWSC facility includes offices, state of the art analytical laboratories, advanced bench-scale testing equipment and a Visitor Center. Through their Visitor Center (see photo), the GWSC plays an active role in community education about water sources and need for water conservation. They are currently focusing on Reverse Osmosis (RO) & Membrane Distillation (MD) at the bench/pilot-scale where they have made a significant investment in MD development and testing over the past 2 years. The GWSC have also procured 2 MD pilot units (see photo) and are testing them on various feedwaters, including thermal brine from a thermal desalination plant in Doha. • Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI) • QEERI is a government funded research organization set up about 18 months ago at Qatar Foundation (QF). They have ambitious plans and have identified solar powered RO as one focus area to promote in Qatar. Labs have not been built yet. Committee’s visit to Doha, Qatar October 7 – 10, 2012 7 IDA - Research & Development Committee - Status Report

  8. Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) • QF has identified three “pillars” essential to transform Qatar to a modern knowledge-based economy: Education, Research and Development & Community Development. The “Education” is provided primarily through a variety of campuses setup by well-respected international Universities including Weill Cornell Medical, Texas A&M, Carnegie Mellon, & Northwestern on one site, the Hamad Bin Khalifa University. The “R&D” pillar includes QSTP where multinational companies (including the ConocoPhillips GWSC) have been invited to conduct research here. QEERI is also within this “R&D” pillar of QF. The community development activities involve social needs, cultural heritage organizations, and/or events targeted a fostering a progressive society (e.g. career fair). • Texas A & M University • The visit contained of a lab tour led by one of the chemical engineering post-doctoral students. The labs included a wide range of analytical instruments and some pilot units. Treatability testing focused on precipitation and coagulation, enhanced oxidation and reverse osmosis technologies. • Network to communicate:An agreement was made to hold a workshop and setting up a network of communication between high profile R&D centers in the region, such as (SWCC, KAUST, GWSC, Masdar Centre of Excellence for water Technologies, KISR and others) with the ultimate objective of bringing together those organizations with common research interests to collaborate. The R&D centers shall gather and present summaries of their current research work related to innovation in desalination in late March 2013 in Saudi Arabia.
