  2. WHY WE BELIEVE IN N.T. BAPTISM 1 Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769.

  3. New Testament Baptism • Many who call themselves “Christians” teach and practice some type of baptism • Not all teach and practice the same thing • Our subject = Baptism as commanded in the New Testament of Jesus Christ • Taught in the inspired scriptures • Not a “church” ordinance, but a divine command

  4. New Testament Baptism • Some matters for consideration: • Is “water” involved in the baptism commanded in the New Testament? • What is the “mode” or action of baptism? • What “formula” should be used? • Who should be baptized? • Is baptism involved in the new birth? • What is the purpose of baptism? • Is baptism essential to salvation? (The answers to these questions will overlap.)

  5. One body One Spirit One hope of your calling One Lord One faith One baptism One God and Father of all Which baptism? Ephesians 4:4-6 – Elements essential for “the unity of the Spirit” (see verse 3)

  6. BIBLE BAPTISMS • The baptism of the Israelites unto Moses (1 Cor. 10:1-2) • The washings [lit. "baptisms"] of the OT (Heb. 9:10; cf. Lev. 11:25; Num. 19:13, 19) • The baptism of John (Mt. 3:4-6; 21:25; Mk. 1:4-5; 11:30; Lk. 3:1-3, 7; 7:29-30; 20:4; Jn. 1:25-26, 28, 31; 3:23; Acts 19:3-4) • The baptism of the Holy Spirit (Mt. 3:11; Mk. 1:8; Lk. 3:16; Jn. 1:33; Acts 1:5) • The baptism of fire (Mt. 3:11; Lk. 3:16) • The baptism of Jesus (Mt. 3:13-17; Mk. 1:9; Lk. 3:21) • The baptism of suffering (Mt. 20:22-23; Mk. 10:38-39; Lk. 12:50) • The baptism of the Great Commission (Mt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16:15-16; Acts 19:5) • The baptism for the dead (1 Cor. 15:29)

  7. The One Baptism • As seen in the previous chart, there are numerous “baptisms” mentioned in the Bible • But as we saw in Ephesians 4:5 there is only “one baptism” that is commanded to be obeyed by those who would “keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

  8. “Water” baptism? Our first question: • Does the “one baptism” involve water? • Or is it as some say, “a dry baptism?” • By this is meant (as one denominational preacher said) “sort of a spiritual baptism” that does not involve obeying the Lord by being baptized in water in the name of Jesus Christ

  9. Does the “one baptism” of the New Testament involve water? • The Great Commission • Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16 • Whatever “baptism” Jesus spoke of in this commission would surely be the “one baptism” of Ephesians 4:5. • We find the teaching and practice of that baptism in the book of Acts • 8:36-39; 10:47-48 • This was baptism “in the name of the Lord”- 10:48

  10. Does the “one baptism” of the New Testament involve water? • The Great Commission - Whatever “baptism” Jesus spoke of in this commission would surely be the “one baptism” of Ephesians 4:5. • That this is baptism in water in the name of Jesus is also upheld in the letters of the New Testament - Hebrews 10:22; Ephesians 5:25-27; I Peter 3:20-21 • The involvement of the Spirit in the results and effect of baptism is everywhere seen in the New Testament – cf. I Cor. 12:12-13

  11. Question 2 – “Mode” or action of baptism? • What do some people say about this? Q. How is Baptism given? A. Whoever baptizes should pour water on the head of the person to be baptized...." (Baltimore Catechism, No. 1, 1933, p. 19) • "In His command to baptize, Christ does not specify any mode of baptism. It may be performed in any one of three ways; namely, by sprinkling, pouring, or immersion. One mode of baptism is just as valid as the other." (An Explanation Of Luther's Small Catechism, 1935, p. 147) • "101. Baptism is rightly administered by pouring or sprinkling water upon the person, yet the validity of this sacrament does not depend upon any particular mode of administration." (Confession Of Faith And Government Of The Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1893, p. 55)

  12. THE MODE OF BAPTISM – more human ideas • "Let every adult person, and the parents of every child to be baptized, have the choice of sprinkling, pouring, or immersion." (Doctrines And Discipline Of The Methodist Church, 1956, p. 545) • "Baptism may be administered by sprinkling, pouring, or immersion, according to the choice of the applicant." (Manual: Church Of The Nazarene, 1968, p. 33) • "406. What does the word `baptize' signify? The word `baptize' signifies to apply water. The water may be applied by immersing (dipping) or pouring." (Christopher Drewes, Dr. Martin Luther's Small Catechism: Explained by way of Questions And Answers, 1925, p. 67)

  13. The Scriptural action of baptism What does the word “baptism” mean? BAGD: “(found only in Christian writers) baptism....The person baptized is, as it were, buried w. Christ Col 2:12; 1 Pt 3:21....” (A Greek-English Lexicon Of The New Testament And Other Early Christian Literature, p. 132) Joseph Thayer: “a word peculiar to N.T. and eccl writ., immersion, submersion.... 3. of Christian baptism; this, according to the view of the apostles, is a rite of sacred immersion, commanded by Christ....” (A Greek-English Lexicon Of The New Testament, #908, pp. 94-95) W. E. Vine: “baptism, consisting of the processes of immersion, submersion and emergence (from bapto, to dip)....” (The Expanded Vine’s Expository Dictionary Of New Testament Words, p. 88)

  14. The Scriptural action of baptism? What does the word “baptize” mean? BAGD: “dip, immerse, mid. dip oneself, wash (in non-Christian lit. also ‘plunge, sink, drench, overwhelm’; fig. ‘soak’...)....” (A Greek-English Lexicon Of The New Testament And Other Early Christian Literature, p. 131) W. E. Vine: “to baptize, primarily a frequentative form of bapto, to dip, was used among the Greeks to signify the dyeing of a garment, or the drawing of water by dipping a vessel into another, etc....” (The Expanded Vine’s Expository Dictionary Of New Testament Words, p. 89)

  15. The scriptural action of baptism? • What do the scriptures indicate? • "And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there...." (Jn. 3:23) • "And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water....and they went down both into the water...and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip...." (Acts 8:36, 38-39)

  16. The Scriptural action of baptism? • What do the scriptures indicate? • "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." (Rom. 6:4) • "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead." (Col. 2:12)

  17. Question 3 - THE PROPER BAPTISMAL FORMULA? • "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:38) • "(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)" (Acts 8:16) • "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days." (Acts 10:48) • "When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus." (Acts 19:5) • "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" (Mt. 28:19)

  18. Question 3 - THE PROPERBAPTISMAL FORMULA? • The passages in the previous chart show that NO specific formula is given for what is to be SAID when someone is baptized. • What we find is that people are to be baptized “in the name of Jesus Christ” • “In the name of” means “by His authority; “ “in keeping with His will.” • Anything done “In the name of Jesus Christ” is also in keeping with the will of the Father and the Holy Spirit” • John 14:10 • John 16:12-15 • The “formula” is to do what the Lord teaches in surrender to His authority

  19. Question 4 - Who should be baptized? • Sinners (Acts 2:38; 22:16) • Hearers (Acts 16:14-15, 31-34; 18:8; 19:5) • Learners (Mt. 28:19) • Receivers (Acts 2:41) • Questioners (Acts 2:37-38; 8:36-38; 16:30-34) • Believers (Mk. 16:16; Acts 8:12-13; 16:33-34; 18:8) • Repenter’s (Mt. 3:7-8; Lk. 3:7-8; Acts 2:38) • Confessors (Mt. 3:6; Mk. 1:5; Acts 8:36-37) • Men and women (Acts 8:12) • Infants (____________) • Children (____________)

  20. Question 5 - Is baptism involved in the new birth? • John 3:1-5 - Water and Spirit • Some say the “water” means physical birth and the Spirit refers to the new spiritual birth. • Consider: “BORN OF WATER” G. R. Beasley-Murray: }The popular idea, that the water represents human birth, whether by the semen of man or waters in the womb, in contrast to the divine birth given by the Spirit, is excluded by the fact that the whole expression ‘of water and spirit’ defines the manner in which a man is born ‘from above’ (‘again’ in the KJV) and John 1:13 declares that the birth from God has nothing to do with human begetting [emphasis added].~ (Baptism in the New Testament, p. 228)

  21. Baptism and the New Birth NEWNESS OF LIFE FOLLOWS BAPTISM(Romans 6:2-4) Paul’s Order Death Burial Raised Newness Man’s Order Death Newness Burial Raised

  22. Question 6 - What is the purpose of baptism? • In the next few charts we compare some human ideas with Biblical statements about the purpose and effect of baptism. • Should we accept the conclusions of uninspired humans over the plain statements of God’s word?

  23. THE PURPOSE OF BAPTISM

  24. THE PURPOSE OF BAPTISM

  25. THE PURPOSE OF BAPTISM

  26. THE PURPOSE OF BAPTISM

  27. Is baptism essential to salvation? • This question has essentially already been answered • Baptism (in its scriptural place) is “for the remission of sins” – Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16 • Can one be saved without forgiveness of sins? • We are “baptized into Christ Jesus” – Romans 6:3; Galatians 3:26-27 • Can one be saved without a right relationship with Christ Jesus

  28. Is baptism essential to salvation? The question has essentially been answered • Baptism follows faith, repentance and confessing faith in Christ, but precedes salvation – Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; I Peter 3:21 • All scriptural information puts baptism before salvation • The Bible answer is YES! • Baptism IS required to be cleansed of sin and to be saved!

  29. MAN IS PURIFIED BY... • Faith (Acts 15:9) • Christ (Tit. 2:14) • Christ’s blood (Heb. 9:13-14) • His response to God (Jas. 4:8; 1 Jn. 3:3) • Obeying the truth (1 Pet. 1:22) • Which One Is Not Essential??? • If God instructs us to hear His word (Romans 10:17), • believe in Him and His Son (Heb. 11:6); • repent of sins (Acts 17:30); • confess our faith in Jesus (Romans 10:9-10); • and be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38), how could we hope to be saved in defiance of His will?
